The European Students' Association for Cultural Heritage (ESACH) is a European network of university students, professional colleges, young graduates and professionals/researchers in the field of cultural heritage.

It was formed in 2017 to respond to the call for participation by the German Cultural Heritage Committee and the European Commission on the occasion of the celebration of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.

During 2018, the network became integrated by university students from eight countries, which became an international network. As a result of this presence, the first international meeting of the network was hosted by the University of Girona (Spain) in June 2018.

History[edit]

ESACH was born in February 2017 at the University of Passau in Germany on the initiative of a group of German law students interested in cultural heritage, being part of the German government's initiatives for the celebration of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.[1] ESACH was founded with the idea of raising awareness among students and young people in general about the importance of safeguarding heritage.[2]

In this way, ESACH became "the first interdisciplinary and intergenerational European network in the field of cultural heritage with the vision of reconnecting the notions of heritage and culture in related academic disciplines".[3]

After its establishment in Germany, the network spread through other territories, creating ESACH groups in universities and associations in several EU countries: Italy, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, Poland, Belgium and Sweden. Each group has a focus on cultural heritage, favouring the exchange of information and research, the organization of academic events or with citizens in general in their countries and regions, also at European level.

The network has relied on the support of the member universities since its creation, but also with the important support of sponsors, including International Council on Monuments and Sites Germany, Santander Art and Culture Law Review, AEGEE (Association of États Généraux des Étudiants de l'Europe), Mazu Press, Europa Nostra, the German Cultural Heritage Committee or the Swedish National Heritage Board.[4]

ESACH and the European Year of Cultural Heritage[edit]

During 2018, Europe celebrated the European Year of Cultural Heritage, which the European Commission and the European Parliament convened with the objective "to encourage more people to discover and engage with Europe's cultural heritage, and to reinforce a sense of belonging to a common European space".[5]

On the occasion of this celebration, ESACH was invited to participate in the Policy Debate of the European Heritage Summit in Berlin, together with other young Europeans, delivered a Message from the Young Generation throughout Europe. He also participated in the organization of the "Student Summit: Culture Up Your Future. Living out European Heritage in the digital era".[6]

In addition, representatives of the network participated in the Annual Meeting of the German Cultural Heritage Committee (DNK), in Strasbourg (France) and in the Höstömote organized by the Swedish National Heritage Board, in Stockholm (Sweden).[7]

International meetings[edit]

In addition to the activities carried out by the members of each ESACH group, an international meeting is held annually at a European university. The first ESACH meeting was held at the University of Girona (Spain) in June 2018,[8] second at the University of Genoa (Italy) in October 2019 and the third is scheduled to take place throughout 2020 at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain).

Aims[edit]

The main objective of this network is to be an instrument for exchanging knowledge, experiences and research; raise public awareness about the importance of cultural heritage; and contribute, as a European network that is, to continue building Europe on the foundations of its common past and shared by all its inhabitants, reaching the entire population, especially the new generations.[9]

Organization[edit]

ESACH has since its creation a European Coordination Committee composed of five members and their respective Innovation Groups which, since the first international meeting in Girona, is made up of students and young professionals from various countries. The work of this committee focuses on the coordination of the members of the network, carrying out the projects established at European level and being the maximum representation before the institutions, associations, universities, etc.

Each ESACH group of European universities and associations is headed by a Coordinator, being its maximum representative at the local level.

Members[edit]

ESACH is currently made up of students and graduates from twelve European universities, also by individual members from a dozen countries outside and within the European Union.
