Shokei Matsui was appointed as the new chairman of International Karate Organization and he renamed the competition to European Weight Category Karate Championships.[3]

Second Championships they increased it to four; lightweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight. From 1985 to 1996 European Championships held three weight classes; lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight.[4] From 1997 there has been four weight classes; lightweight, middleweight, heavyweight, and super heavyweight.[5]
