Founded in 1989 by Christophe Lefebvre, Nicole Nowicki-Caupin, and Peter Nowicki, with Albert Klinkenbergh as the first president, Eurosite today represents over 70 organizations and individuals in more than 20 European countries.[2] Its members range from leading nature conservation organizations with hundreds of thousands of members and thousands of hectares under management to national and regional nature conservation agencies and individual experts. As the European network of natural site managers, Eurosite focuses its attention on the practical aspects related to the implementation of European nature and climate policies on the ground, in particular with regard to protected areas and other sites of nature conservation value.

Governance[edit]

Eurosite is a membership organization governed by a board consisting of up to 9 members, a council composed of representatives from countries covered by the network, and a general assembly. Its secretariat is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization. Its current thematic priorities and organizational objectives are specified in the multi-annual Eurosite Strategy 2021-2025.[3]

Activities[edit]

The Eurosite network offers its members the opportunity to share their experience, knowledge, contacts and influence, thereby increasing the relevance, impact, magnitude and quality of their work.[4] It provides guidance, convenes meetings, organizes workshops and training, disseminates information, represents its members at European level meetings, and raises awareness for their issues. Eurosite is known for its Twinning initiatives[5] - issue-driven, bilateral or multilateral knowledge exchange between members - and for its thematic working groups[6] . Eurosite currently facilitates the following working groups:

  • Economics and Ecosystem Services Working Group (EESWG)
  • Wetlands and Climate Change Working Group (WCCWG)
  • Eurosite Management Planning Expert Group (EMPEG)
  • Peatland Restoration and Management Group (PRMG)
  • Remote Sensing Support Group (RSSG)
  • Agriculture, Biodiversity and Climate Working Group (ABCWG)
  • Volunteering Working Group (VWG)
  • Conservation Finance Working Grou (CFWG).

Partnerships[edit]

Eurosite works together with strategic partners such as the International Land Conservation Network (ILCN)[7], the European Landowners' Organization (ELO), CEEWeb[8], the European Habitats Forum(EHF)[9], the Society for Ecosystem Restoration Europe (SERE)[10], Global Coalition for Biodiversity[11], the Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI), the Migratory Birds for People Programme[12] and others.
