W.A.G. payment solutions, a.s. (more commonly known by its trade name Eurowag), is a pan-European integrated payment & mobility platform focused on the commercial road transport industry. Eurowag seeks to democratize the road mobility sector through a technological revolution by offering sustainable technological and financial solutions that will benefit the transportation industry, the society, and the environment.

Eurowag was founded in 1995 in the Czech Republic by founder and board chairman Martin Vohánka and has grown into an international technology firm supporting trucking activities to customers.[1] Eurowag offers services for over 100,000 trucks including fuel and toll payments, routing, fleet management, fuel sales, and support for e-mobility.[2]

Eurowag is headquartered in Prague and employs more than 1,000 people of 30 nationalities across 18 offices in Europe.

Services

Eurowag is involved in the provision of services to the CRT industry which are focused on two primary segments:

  • Payment solutions — comprises energy payments through pre-pay or post-pay fuel cards and toll payments.
  • Eurowag provides payments for toll and other services, such as payments for fuel and recharging of electric vehicles through an extensive international acceptance network.[3]
  • Mobility solutions — comprising tax refund services, telematics, smart routing apps, and other adjacent services.[4]

Eurowag integrated road mobility services for international transport companies such as parking, truck washes, and repairs. It also extends to tax refunds, telematics, navigation applications, financial services, and a range of related services to enable the effective and sustainable operation of fleets on European roads.

The company's core customers are small companies with one to five trucks, which make up 80% of the industry.[5] Eurowag enables smaller haulage companies to use a single payment system for fuel and tolls as well as insurance and VAT refund claim processes.[6] These are often family firms with no more than half a dozen lorries yet whose operations are cross-border.

Eurowag offers different types of services such as fuel card, financial support and telematic systems for companies and businesses. With Eurowag fuel card, it is possible to gain access to a wide network of more than ten thousand fuel stations across Europe that accept these cards.[7]

In addition, Eurowag operates several of its own service stations at key border crossings and can provide its customers with the best possible prices for high-quality fuel.[8]

History

The history of Eurowag started in 1995 when Martin Vohanka founded W.A.G. group s.r.o. in his hometown of Most, North Bohemia. The company became fully operational one year later, distributing refinery products to agricultural and manufacturing companies as well as to filling stations.[9]

In 2000 the company moved its base to Prague and started to expand its portfolio with products as fuel cards. Fifteen years later, in 2015, Martin Vohanka sold a third of the company to TA Associates, a leading global private equity fund based in Boston, MA.[10] And in spring of 2021, Eurowag listed on the London Stock Exchange.[11]

Acquisitions

The company has been growing mainly organically by entering new geographies and expanding its portfolio. However, acquisitions have also been playing an important role since 2014, when Eurowag acquired Czech Logistics (later renamed to Reamon Tax), a company offering tax refund services in the EU.[12] Other acquisitions followed, the most significant being a takeover of Princip, a.s., the Czech telematics market leader,[13] and Slovak-based Sygic, the world-leader in offline navigation.[14][15]

In 2019, Eurowag acquired a majority stake in Spanish-based ADS, a leader in fuel cards on the Spanish and Portuguese markets.[16]

In 2021, Eurowag partnered with Dutch-based Last Mile Solutions, the fastest-growing platform for electromobility services.[17] And in the same year, Eurowag has also joined forces with Drivitty, a Lithuanian company specializing in digital payment management for refueling.[18]

Innovation

Eurowag is also involved in clean mobility innovations, and the connection to Sygic EV has launched an integrated payment at 297,000 public charging stations.[19] In April 2021 Eurowag launched its eFleet Management product, which helps in maximizing the use of electric vehicles in company fleets. Users of eFleet Management can view information such as the battery charge level and real-time vehicle location, nearby charging stations, and an assessment of charging costs in one place.[20]

Product called E.V.A. (Enhanced Vehicle Assistant) completely transforms toll payment and telematics services.[21] Combined with Eurowag's EETS on-board unit, EVA provides easy toll payments in 8 countries and 3 of the busiest tunnels.[22][23] Advanced telematics integration delivers significant cost savings for haulers in fuel and maintenance. While unique geolocation technology (Fuel Guard) protects them from most fuel fraud and theft.[24]
