Evan O'Byrne
Evan O'Byrne is a member of St Michael's Rowing Club, an Irish rower and on the roster for the Harvard Crimson rowing team class of 2030.[1] He won two Irish national championship titles in 2025[2][better source needed] and made the Irish rowing team for the first time in 2024.[3]
Career
Evan O'Byrne is from Crecora,[4] County Limerick and went to school at Ardscoil Rís, Limerick.[5] He began rowing at St Michael's Rowing Club who won the Rowing Ireland "Club Of The Year" award in 2025.[6]
O'Byrne was selected for the Irish U19 World Championship team in 2024.[3] Entered in the Junior Men's Coxed Four (JM4+) alongside Michaeldan Lucey (Lee Valley RC), Mattias Cogan (Skibbereen RC), Dominic Casey (Skibbereen RC) and cox Luke Fitzgerald (Castleconnell boat club). The four finished in 5th position in the A-final in St. Catharines, Canada.[7]
In 2025, he was selected for the European U19 Championship team in Kruszwica, Poland.[8] Entered in the Junior Men's Quadruple Scull (JM4x), the crew finished 5th in the B-Final with a time of 6:01.88[9]
Following this, O'Byrne won his first Irish National Championship title for St. Michaels in the Junior Men's Double Scull (JM2x) racing with Jack Rafferty.[10] Both members of this crew went on to compete and win the Irish National Championship in the Junior Men's Quadruple Scull (JM4x) the following day.
To conclude the 2025 racing season, Evan raced at the U19 World Rowing Championships]in Trakai, Lithuania.[11] Racing in the same crew as the European Championships, the crew progressed to finish first in the B-final.[12]
To start 2026, Evan O'Byrne partnered Mattias Cogan (Skibbereen RC) again to set the fastest Junior Men's pair (JM2-) time at the November Rowing Ireland High Performance trial and gained selection for the 2026 European Rowing Championships in Brandenburg an der Havel in Germany. This crew finished 6th in the A final.[13] To make history,[original research?] both O'Byrne and Cogan will[speculation?] be the first men's athletes in the Irish rowing system to compete at three U19 World Championship events.[14][not in citation given] Holly Davis (Lee Valley RC) is the only other athlete in the Irish rowing system with this history.[citation needed]
O'Byrne announced his commitment to Harvard University on Instagram in late 2025[15] and plans to join the programme in the class of 2030 to compete at D1 level there.[citation needed]
