Evdokia Vasilievna Petova-Filova (21 March 1901 – 5 March 1973) was a Bulgarian anthropologist and art historian.
Life
She was born on 21 March 1901 in Shumen. She was the daughter of Colonel Vasil Petova, a military instructor and former head of Georgi Rakovski Military Academy, and Nedda Papazova (Papazoglu)from Kazanlak. After graduating from high school, she studied in Munich and Würzburg from 1918 to 1922, where she received a doctorate in art history and philosophy. She first taught at a girls’ high school, and in 1925 was appointed curator of the National Museum of Anthropology. She was the author of twelve works and several monographs on Bulgarian folk arts and crafts. [1]
Career
In 1932, she was elected an associate member of the Bulgarian Archaeological Institute. As the wife of Prime Minister and Regent Bogdan Filov between 1940 and 1944, she was close to the Royal Palace (Sofia), particularly Giovanna of Savoy.[2]
After the 1944 Bulgarian coup d'état and the arrest of Bogdan Filov, their property was confiscated by the new authorities. She was expelled from the Ethnographic Museum, and in May 1945, together with her relatives, she was imprisoned, first in Dulovo in 1946, and later in Ruse and Lovech. In 1957, she was transferred to Samokov, where she lived for most of the remainder of her life. As she was barred from official employment under the Communist state, she earned a living by teaching German and French. [2]
For about a decade, she searched for original documents and archives about the Bulgarian Renaissance artist and icon painter Nikola Obrazopisov in Samokov and the region. Her book about Obrazopisov and his personality was published posthumously by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1994.[3] [4]
Death
Despite her repeated requests, she was not allowed to return to Sofia until late in her life, when she lived with relatives in the city. She died of hepatitis in Sofia in early March 1973.[5]
