Everyday Speech
Everyday Speech is an educational technology company that provides video-based social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula to PreK-12 educators. Their materials are geared toward speech language pathologists, special educators, school psychologists, school social workers, general education teachers, and other learning professionals.[1]
The Everyday Speech curricula helps students to develop five core SEL skills: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.[2]
Video modeling is a core part of their curricula. Each lesson includes video recordings to model skills to help students adapt to new social environments, navigate their emotions, and make informed social decisions to solve problems.[3]
History
Everyday Speech was founded in 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts by certified SLP, Brittany Brunell and co-founder Cal Brunell.[4] Their first product, an iPad app called Let’s Be Social!, launched in January 2014 and included twenty-five lessons created by a team of licensed speech-language pathologists. The app was initially created to teach social skills to students on the Autism spectrum.[5] It was used in Northeastern's Speech-Language and Hearing Center, and continued to be built out with assistance from Northeastern University's venture accelerator IDEA.[6]
Everyday Speech built and released five apps in total before pivoting from an app-based business to a video-driven Social Learning Platform.[5]
