Eugene (Evgeny) Plotkin (Russian: Евгений Борисович Плоткин; September 22 1955 – March 20 2026) was a Soviet-Israeli mathematician.
Biography
Eugene Plotkin was born in 1955 in Sverdlovsk. His parents, originally from Belarus, came to the city after World War II. His father, Boris Plotkin, was a mathematician.
In 1961, his father received an invitation to teach at higher education institutions in Riga, and was appointed professor at the University of Latvia. After graduating from high school, Eugene Plotkin began studying mathematics at Saint Petersburg University (former Leningrad), graduating in 1978. In 1985, he completed his PhD[2].
In 1978 Plotkin returned to Riga, and until 1993 taught at Riga Technical University, where he held the rank of associate professor[3].
In 1993 he began teaching at Bar-Ilan University. In 2002 he was appointed professor, and in 2023 he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus.
Several doctoral theses and four postdoctoral positions were prepared under his supervision. He published 68 scientific articles[4]., served as editor of three journals in the field of mathematics, and served as member / chair of the organizing committee of 13 scientific conferences in Israel, Russia, Georgia, Germany, and United States. In 2023 he received the Rector's Prize for Scientific Innovation[5].
Plotkin was a visiting professor at the University of Bielefeld, University of Tsukuba, University of Manitoba, Northwestern University, and the Max Planck Society.
Alongside his academic pursuits, he was interested in other fields such as photography, geology, writing, and mushroom research. He published several stories and a book on special stones.
Plotkin has been married since 1977. His daughter Julia was born in 1978 and graduated from Tel Aviv University.
