Evin Harrah Cosby is a luxury boutique owner and the inspiration for Rudy Huxtable on the program The Cosby Show. She is the daughter of Bill Cosby and Camille Hanks Cosby.

Biography

Evin Harrah Cosby was born to Bill Cosby and Camille Hanks Cosby at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles, California in 1976. She is the youngest of the Cosby children, with older siblings being (chronologically): Erika Ranee, Erinn Chalene, Ennis William (deceased), and second-to-youngest Ensa Camille. At birth, Evin weighed 8 lbs and 1.5 ounces.[3] Evin's middle name came from William Fisk Harrah, with whom father Bill was close friends.[4]

As a child, The New Yorker reported that Evin was babysat by family friends Tina Turner and Diana Ross in their dressing rooms.[5] When Evin started school, she began elementary school at Banks Street Elementary, a private school in New York. From there, Evin moved to New York's oldest nonsectarian private school, Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, which serves K-12. After graduating high school, Evin went to Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Spelman is a traditionally African-American college. Both Bill and Camille wanted their children to attend African-American colleges, including Evin.[6][7]

From Spelman, Evin transferred to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where she focused on design.[2]

PB & Caviar

With her parents' financial backing, Evin decided to open her own business rather than working for someone else. She opened PB & Caviar Boutique along with co-owner Wai Chan, a fashion boutique located in Tribeca in New York City at 88 Thomas Street. Evin explained the name as "I have a five-year-old daughter who loves peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. And I thought, adults like caviar. So PB & Caviar reflects the affordable & chic, grown-up yet young elements of the store.” The boutique sold both children's and women's clothing, including labels Ben Sherman, Diesel, Tracy Reese, Melissa Odabash, Anna Sui, Torn by Ronny Kobo, Serfontaine, Sauce and Butter, Vanita Rose, Sestra Moja, Ingwa Malero, Chelsea Flower, Scoop, Danang, and Interluid.[7][8] The boutique also sold children's toys and had a coloring table.[9]

After three years at the Tribeca location, Evin decided to move locations to the Lower East Side at 151 Ludlow Street. Before the move, Evin decided that at the new location they would no longer carry children's clothing and focus on women's clothing instead.[10]

Criticism

During an interview with NY Daily News, Evin compared herself to United States President Barack Obama, another "African American elite". Evin stated, "My own people used to say to me, ‘You speak like a white woman.’ What does that even mean, anyway? Everyone has their way of speaking and living their life. No one should be judging and assuming that because I’m black, I have to speak in that hip-hop way. That’s something I prefer not to do. I also went to private schools - Bank Street elementary, so I was surrounded by people like me. Not so much African-American, but privileged. I don’t really have a connection to other people who didn’t have my lifestyle. But my dad is very into helping people from his own community in Philadelphia.”[11]

The statement was interpreted by many in the media as privileged and out of touch, with one commentary calling her "black nouveau riche".[12][13]

In December 2014, Evin released a statement that responded to criticism of her father and the sexual assault allegations he had received. It read: "He is the FATHER you thought you knew. The Cosby Show was my today's TV reality show. Thank you. That's all I would like to say :)" That was followed by a statement on another day that read:

"Rape is a serious allegation and it is supposed to be taken VERY seriously but so is falsely accusing someone. When someone rapes a person, they go to prison. THAT should also happen to the person that has wrongfully accused an innocent victim. They are not ONLY destroying innocent people's life, they are ALSO making it hard for the MEN and Women to find justice when they have been raped. Drugged- you can remember the whole damn day but you were drugged? Just sayin. Memory- you can remember you looked at (allegedly) each other, people were starring, allegedly remembering your home address, allegedly the name you called him, allegedly But you were allegedly drugged. I would like to thank EVERYONE that has been sharing, voicing and putting their beautiful positive energy out there for me and my family. There will always be jealous, vengeful and crazy people out there to break anyone down. Everyday we wake up and appreciate the love and support from everyone. There's more positive in life than we think. It's the BS that can be overwhelming. We keep fighting each day. The challenges in life can only make us stronger. The ones that are angry can't live as easy as the ones that can love, RESPECT and not to find the easy way out by making FALSE accusations. It's a shame how some people sit behind the computer waiting for bad things to happen to someone. Isn't it easier to be happy? And to want the best for someone that has done such great things in life? It could be a friend, a family or a pet.... Just be HAPPY! It's waaaaay easier. Thank you again! Thank you Jill Scott and Faizon Love!! I would also like to say THANK YOU for the all the other intelligent people that know what this is! We are standing strong! Xoxo- Evin".[14]
