Exacompta
Exacompta is a European brand of stationery and filing articles, founded in Paris in 1928 where many stationery items such as account books, diaries and filing products are still produced today. Exacompta is a major part of the Exacompta Clairefontaine group, a company listed on the Euronext Paris exchange since 1996.[1]
History
In 1928, Charles Nusse founded a workshop to manufacture accounting ledgers in Paris, under the brand Exacompta. It followed the creation of a diary workshop.
Their office relocated to their current site in 1932, located along the Canal Saint-Martin in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, a location chosen for shipping logistics and proximity to stationers.
As accounting ledgers became burdensome to carry, Exacompta started marketing the ring binder in France in 1936.
As real estate space became valuable in the capital, an adjacent office building was also acquired in 1981, a former electric power plant constructed for the 1900 World's Fair.[2] Among the last industrial vestiges of the district, this site was designed by architect Paul Friesé (a medalist at the World Expo of 1900), who also designed École Centrale Paris.[3]
Exacompta currently has 12 production sites, 8 in France (Breteuil, Brou, Château-Renault, Houdan, Niort, Paris, Segre and Voiron) with others in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The company is currently chaired by François Nusse and managed by Charles Nusse (respectively son and grandson of the founder).
Historically dedicated to the production of accounting records and snippets, the brand has over the years increased its presence in new product categories, in particular with a strategy of growth by adjacency.
The company has a history of international acquisitions in its sector, including Multiform, an Austrian desk accessories manufacturer in 2007, Rainex, a French producer specialising in classification ranges in 2016[4], and the Switzerland-based Biella and Falken filing brands in 2019.[5]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company diversified into providing PPE products such as visors, masks and screens to aid offices and healthcare efforts.[6]
Products
Exacompta is one of the benchmark brands of the product categories that it markets today, in France in particular.[7] The company specialises in filing and organisation products such as folders, binders, and desk accessories.
In regards to diaries which they also produce, the company is in the middle value range and can be compared to Éditions Oberthur, or Éditions Quo Vadis which belong to the same group Exacompta Clairefontaine. In this area, Exacompta has long faced its more upscale competitor, Filofax, particularly popular in the UK.[8]
Exacompta has a particular significance with French culture, with the majority of products still made in France. An example of this is the 'Fabrique en France' (or FAF for short) desk pad, produced in the workshop of Gustave Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower) since the 1920s.[9]
Environmental approach
Due to the consideration of ecological issues by individuals but also by companies in their choice of products (in particular paper producers), Exacompta started to change its production methods during the 2000s. A significant selection of its products is thus certified or labeled, resulting from an approach to reduce harmful effects on the environment, while maintaining a qualitative level identical to that of other equivalent products.[10]
This ecological consideration is reflected in particular by the marketing of products:
- FSC[11] and PEFC-certified and therefore guaranteed to come from sustainably managed forests
- Blue Angel label certified for products which are made from recycled materials
- A small selection of Climate Neutral-certified products, which invests funds into a hydro-electric plant in the Congo.[12]
- REACH, a European Union regulation adopted to better protect human health and the environment from the risks associated with chemical substances.[10]
