Exodus: The Helium Sea is a science fiction novel by British author Peter F. Hamilton, published on June 16, 2026, by Random House Worlds. Set in the distant future, it is the direct sequel to Exodus: The Archimedes Engine and concludes the Exodus duology. The novel continues to explore humanity's struggle for survival and independence against the advanced transhuman species known as Celestials in the Centauri Cluster, as an exiled faction returns from beyond the Helium Sea to claim vengeance.

The book serves as the final narrative prequel to the upcoming sci-fi action-adventure role-playing game Exodus, developed by Archetype Entertainment, a division of Wizards of the Coast. An audiobook version, narrated by John Lee, was released simultaneously.

Plot

Four thousand years prior to the main events, the Crown Dominion invades Kelowan to halt Queen Zuberi-Dulcina's "Evolution Project"—a radical plan to genetically evolve Imperial Celestials into an army capable of overthrowing the god-like Elohim. Before her execution, Zuberi transfers her mind to Princess Khepri. Khepri escapes into exile aboard a stealthed ship alongside Zuberi's loyalists: Liliana, Dagon, and the archon Iuntin.

In the present, following the catastrophic collision between Boksrock and Kelowan, the human arkship Diligent flees through a Gate of Heaven to Capo Frois. To clear humanity's name, Finn Jalgori-Tobu broadcasts "The Sibling Plea" across the system. He reveals that the rebel leader Gyvoy Enfoe is actually a Celestial archon who used neural compulsion to force Finn to alter the Archimedes Engine's trajectory. In the Kelowan system, the newly elevated Empress Helena-Thyra manages the resulting refugee crisis. Secretly, Thyra is aligned with her father Bekket and Iuntin, using the disaster and the assassination of a rival queen to consolidate power, annex Capo Frois, and pave the way for Khepri's ascendance.

Meanwhile, Josias Aponi realizes he is being held captive aboard the stealthed Traveler ship Arcadia's Moon by Gyvoy (revealed to be Dagon) and Liliana, who are transporting three thousand tons of stolen antimatter. Utilizing illicit network routines, Josias hacks the ship's systems, forces Gyvoy into an escape pod, and ejects him. Josias then uses his control over the antimatter confinement codes to negotiate an alliance with the ship's captain, Andino.

Terence Wilson-Fletcher, accompanied by his family and the assassin Medusa, pursues the Diligent in the advanced ship Aeacus to rescue his son, Aljan. During the voyage, Terence and his wife receive advanced regenerative medical upgrades from the ship's pods. Recognizing they cannot fight the Crown Dominion's pursuing Squadron Twenty-Three alone, Terence forms an alliance with the Celestial archons Olomo and Sahdiah. Together, they ambush the squadron. A surviving frigate commander, Radwarno-Werkas, uses a stasis technique known as the "unlife" to survive the ambush and attempts a high-gee suicide strike on the Diligent. She is ultimately destroyed by a rare Remnant Era Q-distort weapon fired by the arriving Arcadia's Moon.

Reunited aboard the Diligent, the surviving human factions pool their intelligence and realize Liliana is heading to the Hoa Quinzu system to acquire a devastating atmospheric weapon known as the Crystal Gun. To survive the escalating Great Game, the group divides their forces across multiple fronts. Terence, Jimena, and Medusa depart for Hoa Quinzu in the Aeacus to intercept Liliana and prevent her from securing the Remnant Era weapon. Captain Dejean and the Diligent set a course for the JK67b system, intending to trade a portion of their stolen antimatter with outcast Cosmoids in exchange for vital defensive and structural upgrades to the arkship. Simultaneously, Josias, Finn, and Ellie travel to the loOx world of Janton-Io to follow up on a mysterious message Josias received from a rumored Elohim archon. Aided by the Abisqu Celestial Wybul, they evade Imperial bounty hunters and hire a local guide to take them across a vast waterprairie to find the Elohim agent. Concurrently, on the planet Uixic, Makaio-Faraji's son Neusch uses a biological android to covertly investigate the disappearance of his allies, uncovering hidden naval platforms and a web of espionage surrounding the refugee expansion zones.
