Extreme Kayak Fishing
Extreme Kayak Fishing Inc is an offshore kayak fishing tournament series based out of Pompano Beach FL. Pompano is very close to an ocean inlet, which gives quick access to the reef and wrecks laying just a mile off shore. The Gulf Stream comes closest to Florida's shoreline here. It causes an average current of about one knot running parallel to the reef line which makes the area perfect for an offshore tournament location. The Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament is the biggest OFFSHORE kayak fishing tournament in the United States. Now Extreme hosts four tournaments per year with one (The Saltwater World Championship) taking place in the Bahamas. Extreme created the very first sailfish only kayak tournament in the world in 2014. The series attracts anglers from all over the US.[1][2]
Extreme has a tournament magazine called Extreme Kayak Fishing Magazine which comes out quarterly.[3]

Nations First Sailfish Smack Down[edit]
Firefighter Chris Thomas and friend Ryan Jones from Oklahoma City took first and second place, respectively, in the Extreme Kayak Fishing Sailfish Smack Down at Pompano Beach, Fla. on Jan. 25-26 2014. This event was the first of its kind being a sailfish only kayak tournament. Not only was the event a success but the winner was from a landlocked state. It was the first time a angler from another state won an Extreme event. The Sailfish Smack Down set the stage for 2014 and was the first tournament to really put this series on the map on a global scale. This tournament is a catch and release event.
Rules: When an angler hooks up to a Sailfish, they must radio to the help boats so that the catch can be monitored, documented and verified. The help boats will also assist in the release of all Sailfish. For a landed Sailfish to count, the angler must touch the leader. The maximum leader length allowed is 15ft. Stinger rigs are not permitted! Circle Hooks are required for all live or dead natural baits, only single hook rigs are permitted. The tournament committee will be checking the length of everyone's leader on the beach in the morning and once a Sailfish is caught. In the event of a Sailfish being landed with no help boat around, The angler must keep the fish in the water until a help boat arrives to document and assist in the release for the safety of the fish. VHF radios are mandatory.[12] [13]
Battle In The Bahamas 2014[edit]
The Extreme Battle in the Bahamas was the very first kayak tournament where an angler can bring his or her gear and kayak from one country to another. This event is a two day tournament & known as the (Saltwater World Championship) for offshore kayak anglers. With the kayaks in the hold, 33 anglers, their companions and tournament organizers travelled in first-class aboard the Balearia fast ferry for the three-hour trek across the Atlantic to the beautiful Bahamas. Once at the Island a short, narrated bus ride provided informative local information before arriving at tournament headquarters, the Flamingo Bay Hotel and Marina on Grand Bahama Island. Anglers wanting live bait pre-ordered goggleye and pilchards from Joe Settembrino of Hillsboro Inlet Live Bait. Settembrino carried the bait over to the Bahamas aboard his Contender center console. At the end of day one, the battle of the plastics versus the pelagics was in full swing. Brian Nelli and Andrew Mixon hit the shore with king mackerels weighing 38.4 and 32.7 pounds respectively. Donny Miley bested a bruiser amberjack that hit 35.9 pounds and Dion Philipon jigged an impressive 32.3-pound black grouper from the rocky depths. The second and final day saw the marlin action along with some nice dolphin & more grouper. Brian Nelli reigned as Extreme Champion. For 1st place, he collected $5,000 cash, a trophy cup and the coveted Extreme Championship Ring. He wasn’t finished. Nelli also won the Trash Can Slam and Biggest Pelagic divisions adding another $1,000, a rigged SUP, Guy Harvey jewelry, a custom fish mount, Costa sunglasses and a $250 Yak Gear gift certificate to his bounty. Matt Eckert’s 11-Hour, 30-Mile Blue Marlin Battle[edit]
The Battle in the Bahamas was Extreme Kayak Fishing's first international tournament. On April 26, the last day of the Extreme Kayak Fishing Battle in the Bahamas Kayak Fishing two day Tournament. Matt Eckert, 28, a Buffalo native had something huge on his line, first thinking it was a big wahoo but then seeing the massive fish jump. It was a 300lb Blue Marlin. Matts gear was a Penn Spinfisher 6500 LL with 30-pound PowerPro braid. When Matt saw the Marlin he knew he was in for a long fight. Around the same time Matt was fighting his fish Joe Kraatz was also fighting a Marlin, his was a White Marlin. Both anglers were in a race to win the Marlin Division. Around 3:00pm Matt was being towed super deep and the tournament directors wondered if he would make it back for the awards ceremony. He had one of the help boats staying with him. Hours later Matt & the help boat can finally see the leader for the first time. Matt pulls the fish towards himself, and he grabs the leader. That’s when the fish freaks out and dove five or six feet under the water. Around 6pm after the 11 hour fight the line finally snapped and the fish was gone. By Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament rules (and many other marlin catch and release standards), Matt Eckert’s leader touch signified a catch. Joe Kraatz’s white marlin, caught and released earlier in the day, won the billfish division but Matt's fight & fish is a true modern epic in the kayak fishing world. In the end it turned out to be an experience and the ride of a lifetime. [17] [18]
