Ezekiel Golan explains how the mind works

Early Life[edit]

Ezekiel Golan, also known as "Doc Zee," is an Israeli born mathematician, inventor and the first industrial NeoShulginist. Born in Tel Aviv in 1970, he moved with his family to Toronto at the age of 5, only to return to Israel 5 years after that in 1980. The part of his childhood spent in Canada made him bilingual and bi-cultural. His father was an economist who worked for Israel's largest bank and his mother a gemologist. Ezekiel spent four years in the Israeli Defense Forces.

Golan has been granted over 100 patents. One of his earliest patents made domesticated crop plants more resilient[2][3]. The implementation of this patent throughout the world greatly increased crop yields and allowed for the global population growth from 6 billion in 1999 to 8 billion in 2023. Golan is the inventor and re-discoverer of several drugs, including 3-MMC, MEAI and Mephedrone. MEAIIs particularly noteworthy in that it has been demonstrating unique and unexpected potential to treat addictions[4][5][6]

Golan’s work was kickstarted in Israel when he would chew Khat leaves with the Yemenite community. Cathinone, the active ingredient in the leaves was legal at the time, and after studying the chemical he discovered it to be a better alternative to cocaine which was popular during that period, so he started making it on his own. When cathinone became illegal he used his skills to examine the molecular skeleton and imagine substitutions. His discoveries ended up leading to the creation of new novel substances that were inexpensive and safe to make and consume.

Golan's work led him to rediscovering Mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone) a stimulant drug which was first synthetized in 1929, but which did not become known to the wider public until Golan rediscovered it in 2003[7]. After his rediscovery of Mephedrone it quickly became widely available because China reverse engineered the process, duplicated it and brought the price down to a point it became available to the masses. Then the media increased its popularity[8] by informing the public about a good legal drug called “Meow Meow,” and that created a huge demand. The drug was released to the masses which achieved Golan’s main goal of getting it out there.

Golan takes very special care to make sure to only create drugs that are legal and distribute them in places that allow them. Not knowing what effects new substances will have, Golan experiments on himself[9], and when he finds substances that he likes he scales them up.

Golan has personally experimented with over 270 of his own creations and believes that psychedelic drugs are an incredible scientific tool for understanding consciousness. He starts with a small dose and gradually increases it, only continuing with a substance that he finds effective.

Despite this uncertainty, Doc Zee has had a number of breakthroughs that have been nothing short of amazing, discoveries that have potential therapeutic uses. He has developed substances that are being investigated for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, and smoking cessation.

While Golan's work has led to the discovery of several popular recreational drugs, he believes that his work has positive effects outside of helping people get high. He has devoted his life to exploring the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of psychoactive substances.

Media[edit]

NEW SCIENTIST - Michael Slezak conducted a series of discussions with Golan. These spawned three articles: The Interview with Dr, Z published August 2014, "high as a kiwi" discussing New Zealand's groundbreaking legislation and "high and dry" describing MEAI (5-methoxy-2-aminoindane) - a binge mitigation agent and ethanol substitute.

DELAYED GRATIFICATION MAGAZINE – the rise and fall of legal highs[10]

The GAURDIAN - Britain's most respected independent newspaper has touched twice on Golan's career as an inventor. When things were just getting started in 2004 a journalist was sent to Tel-Aviv to cover the "Hagigat"[11] phenomenon, and a second time lately, crowning him with the title "The Godfather of Legal Highs"[12]

Chemistry World - Andy Extance from 'Chemistry World' finished what everyone else began. He wrote an article which is quite comprehensive and enlightening. "Wrecked by a high tide"[13]

BBC - Tom Costello of the BBC made a film called "The Last Days of Legal Highs"[14] near the coming into force of the UK psychoactive substances act 2016. A teaser for this film can be viewed here.

Some time before that Steph Atkinson of the BBC made a film called "How Safe Are My Drugs?"[15]

The Walrus- Recently, I had the privilege of being interviewed again - by Jonah Brunet - from the Walrus. I am enjoying having a reason to post a photo of an honorary member of the Phocidae (even though it doesn't link to another documentary). The piece is called "Why It's So Hard to Legalize Recreational Drugs"[16]

The Dr. Zee[17] persona was created on the set of the documentary movie "Legally High" produced by Amos Pictures and Directed by Dan Reed in 2013. The persona was intended to differentiate between the actual person and the character being described in the film. Various newspapers (like the German "Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin") and t.v. channels have been interested over the years.

In Auckland (2014) I attended a conference "Pathway to Reform" . There I met the crew from the Hungarian "DrogRiporter"(that's how they spell it) who did this interview[18] with me - which still to this very day, summarizes many topics that I feel are important to touch on and remain currently relevant.

Talking to Ash from Shifty Perspective was good "clean" fun. See the episode here.

Experience[edit]

Golan completed his high school diploma at Handesaim, Physical Sciences in 1988, and then went on to attend Technion-Machon Technologi Le' Israel between 1992 and 1996 obtaining a B.Sc. in Mathematics, Computer Science.

After graduating he went to work for ORACLE (1996-1998) in Bethesda, Maryland, United States as a Developer. At Oracle Golan joined the Technology team of Oracle Government at the time that the Oracle Web Broker was being conceptualized, implemented and debuted in the Maryland DMV.

After leaving Oracle he joined VOCALTEC (1998-2001) in Tel Aviv, Israel,as a Software Developer

From there Golan become the Head of Information Technology and Bioinformation at EVOGENE LTD. (2001-2005). Where he was responsible for Communications and infrastructure, Laboratory Information Management Systems, and their Gene Discovery group. This was a natural fit as during the same period of time (2000-2004) Golan was also doing work for COMPUGEN as a BioInformatician.

Around that same time in 2004 Golan Founded TREENOVATIONS which was a Plantware initiative with the goal of popularizing live plants as an environmentally friendly building material.

Golan believes that the city can contain much more nature than it presently does. Particularly the vertical spaces (walls and fences) can be modified to provide habitat for a plethora of plants, animals and fungi. He has worked with companies like INVIVO with the purpose of reconstituting urban habitats in a way that is pretty, productive and fun.

After all those careers shaping his vision for the future Golan later attended The University of Queensland (2007-2012) where he received his Ph.D. in Computational Entomology, Modelling (2007 - 2012).

Currently (Since 2021) Golan works as a Special Advisor for Innovation and New Initiatives at CLEARMIND MEDICINE[20] located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. At Clearmind Medical Golan has invented new compounds, genes, methods and treatments to increase the company's IP portfolio. Additionally he advises on scientific questions and experimental designs.
