Holland came from a family with very strong values, historical business background and a tremendous appreciation for the arts. This attributed to vast exposure and immense appreciation relative to music. As a young child he attended parochial school, which provided him with invaluable experiences both educationally, as well as from a religious standpoint. At the age of six, the piano was his musical foundation. Later in childhood, during the inception of his elementary school years, Holland studied classical violin. This facilitated his involvement in several musical venues at a young age. Holland attended Samuel Morse Junior High School. [7]. He was active in his school band, where he played the trumpet, performing with other band members. The early experiences in various musical settings empowered him to pursue his love for music.
Some of his musical influences include: Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimi Hendrix, Quincy Jones, BB King, Ramsey Lewis, Wes Montgomery and Grover Washington Jr. Holland began studying and playing the guitar at the age of thirteen. Much of his initial efforts were self-taught. This continued through early adulthood. As a young adult, his musical activities often included collaborating with various musicians across different genres, including blues, gospel, jazz and rock.
