F/A-259 STRIKER is a Multirole combat aircraft, jointly developed by IAI and Aero Vodochody, the largest aircraft manufacturer in the Czech Republic.
The new aircraft will be built on the base of an earlier Czech aircraft, the L-159 Alca, and will receive upgrades in aviation systems and other advanced technologies of the aerospace industry. The aircraft is designed to have a high level of performance, maneuverability, and increased range which are required in the market and do not have many replacements in light fighter jets.
The STRIKER is designed for Close air support missions, counter-terrorism, operations for defense and patrol along borders, and is designed to be relatively low cost compared to other fighter jets. The cockpit is advanced and very digitally equipped. It is capable of operating from unoccupied tracks, and can be equipped with smart weapons, including weapons with an extended range (standoff). AESA radar, Helmet-mounted display and aerial refueling capability can be installed in the aircraft. The aircraft avionics systems are 4G generation with a future option to install situational awareness technologies for the pilot.
The aircraft will be equipped with a Honeywell F124 turbo-fan engine. It is designed to reach a maximum speed of Mach 0.82 and service ceiling of 43,000 feet.[1]
Plane development plans were unveiled at the Air Show in Farnborough, UK, and the aircraft was to compete in a future U.S. Air Force light attack aircraft contest.
Binyamin Cohen, director of the IAI Lahav plant, told WORLD DEFENSE NEWS and FlightGlobal that "the cooperation with AERO could provide the US Air Force an aircraft that includes state-of-the-art systems made by IAI, an aircraft that will meet the highest requirements."
AERO President, Giuseppe Jordo, added that "Many countries around the world are currently looking for a relatively inexpensive, high-performance and Multirole fighter jet. "There are not many fighter jets of this type on the market today, as this is a new type of aircraft and a new type of requirements on the part of many air forces"".
An experimental platform
IAI received from Aero Vodochody an L-39 Albatross aircraft that serves as a flight testing platform for the project.
