The FC Barcelona–Manchester United football rivalry is an international football rivalry between Barcelona of Spain and Manchester United of England.[1][2] The first ever match was played on 7 March 1984 in the quarter-finals of European Cup Winners' Cup.[3] Since then both the clubs have faced each other in UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.[3]
Head-to-head[edit]
The teams have competed in three finals in their total of 15 matches: one European Cup Winners' Cup final in 1991 and two UEFA Champions League finals in 2009 and 2011, with United winning the Cup Winners' Cup and Barcelona winning both the Champions League finals.[3][4][5][6][7][8]
They have played each other 3 times in Cup Winners' Cup, 10 times in Champions League and 2 times in Europa League. In total 15 matches, Barcelona won 6 times, United won 4 times and 5 matches ended in a draw.[3]
One of the most memorable games between two sides came in the group stages of 1998–99 UEFA Champions League, when they were drawn in Group D with Bayern Munich and Brøndby, both of their matches ended 3–3, with United finishing second and Barcelona finishing third.[3][9][10][11] Manchester United went on winning the trophy that year, beating Bayern Munich in the final at Barcelona's Camp Nou.[12]
