FMB are an Indie-Rock band active in the early nineties most noted for featuring in the 1993 Channel 4 fly-on-the-wall documentary series 'The Next Big Thing'. The band was formed in Lancaster in 1990 by University friends Roger Griffiths (Guitar & vocals), Ragnar O'Connor (Guitar & vocals) and Jeffers Mayo (Guitar), Alex Lutes (Drums) and Milo O'Connor (Bass) joined soon after.

FMB grew from the remnants of Roger and Jeffers's former university band 'the Steeplejacks'. Ragnar supplemented the re-named line-up on guitar, which also featured a revolving cast of university friends on bass and drums. The classic line-up formed when the band relocated to London in 1992 adding Milo O'Connor, the brother of Ragnar, on Bass and Alex Lutes, a school-friend of the O'Connor brothers, on Drums. After building up a strong following in London and being noticed by the music business for their manic live shows the band was picked up by the producers of the channel4 series 'The Next big Thing'[1] to appear in the fly on the wall documentary. Other bands that passed on appearing in the 'next big thing' included Pulp. 'The Next big thing' followed the band as they struggled to achieve success in the music business of the UK in early nineties. Episodes typically featured the band as they rehearsed, travelled to concerts, had meetings with producers and label owners and interacted with the fans. The show was noted for it's humour[2]. The band toured extensively from 1992-94 and appeared on the Melody Maker stage at Reading festival in 1993[3]. Jeffers Mayo left the band in 1993 due to ill health and the stress of touring. After Mayo's departure the band continued as a four piece and completed a second UK tour before disbanding in 1994.

After FMB ended, Ragnar and Milo continued in music with their band Paloma. Alex continued to work as a session drummer and Jeffers works as a lecturer and composer. In 2005 Roger won £1.87 million on the National Lottery[4] and the band was briefly reformed to release some new and some re-worked old material.
