Fabian Dattner is a leadership expert, public speaker[2], educator, and a regular commentator on leadership and ethical issues and the role of women in building a sustainable future[3]. She is founding partner of the leadership consultancy Dattner Group, based in Melbourne, Australia, and of Compass, an Australian national leadership initiative for women, as well as the CEO and co-founder, with Jessica Melbourne-Thomas, of the women in Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics leadership development program Homeward Bound.[4][5][6][7] Dattner and Jessica Melbourne-Thomas were named as "standout thought leaders you need to follow in 2018" by Silicon Republic in December, 2017.[8]

Prizes

In 2017, Dattner Grant was named the overall 2017 #TechDiversity Champion for the company's Compass Program and affiliated global Homeward Bound program, in the Australian #TechDiversity awards.[9]

Dattner was named one of The Australian Financial Review 100 Women of Influence for 2019 (in the Diversity & Inclusion category).[10]

Family background

Fabian Dattner was born in Melbourne in 1954 to the painter Kay Bethel, whose father was the final UK foreign affairs advisor to Haile Selassie, last Emperor of Ethiopia, and Stephen Dattner, who came to Australia from England soon after World War II. At age 17, Kay Bethel was the youngest person accepted into the Royal Art Academy of London. Stephen Dattner was the Head of British Intelligence in Vienna towards the end of World War II and before moving to Australia.[11]. Descending from a 450-year-old line of furriers, Stephen Dattner successfully entered the fur business in Melbourne after his arrival, eventually leading the Stephen Dattner Group.[12]. The family lived in Eltham, Victoria, a hub of Australia's counterculture during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. The Dattners supported artists (Clifton Pugh, John Perceval, John Blackman, Brett Whitely) and Labor politicians including Don Dunstan (former Premier of South Australia).

Early years

Dattner graduated from St Catherine's School and earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Sociology (honours) from La Trobe University. In 1981, Fabian joined Heinemann Educational as Assistant to the Managing Director Nick Hudson, becoming Editor that same year. She joined the family business, the Stephen Dattner Group, in 1985 and became Managing Director in 1988. Stephen retired in 1986. Frustrated by recurring burglaries at the company, Fabian launched Second Chance, a national program designed to address recidivism and help people with criminal records find employment. At its peak, 600 companies committed to hiring ex-prisoners through this transparent program.

In 1990, the Stephen Dattner Group became one of the prominent Australian companies to close due to a sudden increase in interest rates, the 1989 national air strike, and persistent anti-fur activism.

In 1990, Fabian published her first book, *Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained* (Penguin 1990), recounting the closure and her subsequent recovery. Simultaneously, she began working with banks to assist other recession-affected companies, which evolved into Fabian Dattner & Co (a consultancy specializing in facilitating communication between staff and leaders) and then into Dattner Grant, when Jim Grant acquired a 50% stake in the business in 1996.

In January 2018, Dattner bought the company back, operating as Dattner Group.

Dattner Group (Including ReThink, Compass, Open Door)

Dattner is the founding partner and now CEO of Dattner Group, a specialist Leadership Consultancy that supports transformational change in cultures, executive teams, senior leadership, and front-line staff, with a focus on working with women. The business has implemented multi-year initiatives with various organisations (non-profit, corporate, entrepreneurial, government, and educational), including extensive work in utilities, consumer goods, education, and state and federal government.

Compass

Compass is Dattner Group's flagship leadership and development program for women. Dattner created the program in response to the need for greater female representation in leadership and policy-making roles. Public, in-house, organizational, and industry-specific programs are available to women of all ages and professional levels. Compass focuses on the "why" of leadership rather than just the "how."

Homeward Bound

In October 2014, Dattner envisioned Homeward Bound. The first, and largest, all-women expedition sailed to Antarctica in December 2016. [13] Today, the expedition includes participants from 33 nationalities and 26 scientific disciplines. The project aims to raise global awareness of the underrepresentation of women in leadership and the consequences of their absence from crucial decision-making on issues impacting the planet. Dr Jessica Melbourne-Thomas (marine ecologist and ecosystem modeller, resigned April 2016), Dr Justine Shaw (research fellow examining conservation decision-making in terrestrial Antarctica and sub-Antarctica), and Dr Mary-Anne Lea (Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Ecology and Biodiversity Centre at the Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania) co-founded the program. The Australia-based initiative for women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) aims to create a network of 1,000 women leaders by 2026, influencing future policies and fighting climate change. Over 350 women have completed or are participating in Homeward Bound, which always culminates in an expedition to Antarctica.

The 2019 Homeward Bound voyage included Costa Rican diplomat and former Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Christiana Figueres on the staff.[14][15]
