Fabian Dattner is a leadership expert, public speaker[2], educator, and a regular commentator on leadership and ethical issues and the role of women in building a sustainable future[3]. She is founding partner of the leadership consultancy Dattner Group, based in Melbourne, Australia, and of Compass, an Australian national leadership initiative for women, as well as the CEO and co-founder, with Jessica Melbourne-Thomas, of the women in Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics leadership development program Homeward Bound.[4][5][6][7] Dattner and Jessica Melbourne-Thomas were named as "standout thought leaders you need to follow in 2018" by Silicon Republic in December, 2017.[8]

Prizes[edit]

In 2017, Dattner Grant was named as the overall 2017 #TechDiversity Champion for the company's Compass Program and affiliated global Homeward Bound program, in the Australian #TechDiversity awards.[9]

Dattner was named one of The Australian Financial Review 100 Women of Influence for 2019 (in the Diversity & Inclusion category).[10]

Family background[edit]

Fabian Dattner was born in Melbourne in 1954 to the painter Kay Bethel whose father was the final UK foreign affairs advisor to Haile Selassie, last Emperor of Ethiopia, and Stephen Dattner, who came to Australia from England soon after World War II. At 17 years old, Kay Bethel was the youngest person to be accepted into the Royal Art Academy of London. Stephen Dattner was the Head of British Intelligence in Vienna towards the end of World War II and before moving to Australia[11]. Coming from a line of furriers going back 450 years, Stephen Dattner successfully entered the fur business in Melbourne soon after his arrival, eventually heading up the Stephen Dattner Group[12]. The family lived in Eltham, Victoria which was home to the counter culture in Australia during the 30s, 40s and 50s. The Dattners were supporters of artists (Clifton Pugh, John Perceval, John Blackman, Brett Whitely) and Labor politicians including Don Dunstan (former Premier of South Australia).

Early years[edit]

Dattner matriculated from St Catherine's School and graduated from La Trobe University Bachelor of Arts (BA) Sociology (hon). In 1981, Fabian joined Heinemann Educational as Assistant to the Managing Director Nick Hudson, becoming Editor in 1981. She entered the family business, the Stephen Dattner Group in 1985 and became Managing Director in 1988. Stephen retired in 1986. Frustrated with the regular burglaries occurring at the company, Fabian launched Second Chance, a national program for people with a record of offence. Second Chance was created to help address recidivism. At its height, 600 companies committed to offering jobs to ex-prisoners in a transparent program.

In 1990, The Stephen Dattner Group was the first of the high profile Australian companies to close as a result of the sudden increase in interest rates, the national air strike 1989 and the persistent activism of the anti fur lobby.

In 1990, Fabian wrote her first book (Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained, Penguin 1990) in which she told the story of the closure and her subsequent recovery. At the same time, Fabian began working with banks to assist other companies that were casualties of the recession. This business grew into Fabian Dattner & Co (a consultancy specialising in facilitating the conversation between staff and leaders), and then into Dattner Grant when Jim Grant bought 50% of the business 1996.

In January 2018, Dattner bought the company back from Jim Grant and now operates as the Dattner Group (pending).

Dattner Group (Including ReThink, Compass, Open Door)[edit]

Dattner is the founding partner, now CEO of Dattner Group, a specialist Leadership Consultancy supporting transformational change in cultures, executive teams, senior leadership and front line, and working with women. The business has implemented multi year initiatives with a range of organisations (not for profit, corporate, entrepreneurial, government and education) including extensive work in utilities, fast moving consumer goods, education, state and federal government.

Compass[edit]

Compass is Dattner Group's signature leadership and development program for women. Dattner created the program in response to the compelling need for a greater representation of women in leadership and in policy and decision-making. Public, in-house organisational and industry specific programs are available to women at any age and at all professional levels. Compass is a transformational program, more focused on the 'why' of leadership than the transactional 'how'.

Homeward Bound[edit]

In October 2014, Dattner literally dreamt of Homeward Bound. In the dream, she saw the name Homeward Bound, saw the women and Antarctica. The first contingent and largest ever expedition of women, sailed to Antarctica in December 2016.[13] Today, it includes 33 nationalities and 26 fields of science. The project aims to bring global awareness to the low representation of women in leadership roles and the consequence of their continuing absence from decision-making on issues that affect the state of the planet. Dr Jessica Melbourne-Thomas (marine ecologist and ecosystem modeller, resigned April 2016), Dr Justine Shaw ( Research Fellow examining conservation decision making in the terrestrial Antarctica and sub-Antarctic) and Dr Mary-Anne Lea (Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Ecology and Biodiversity Centre at the Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania) became the co founders. The Australia-based leadership initiative for women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) aims to compile a network of 1,000 women leaders by 2026 with the intention this network will influence future policies and fight climate change. Over 350 women have completed or are about to experience Homeward Bound, which always culminates with an expedition to Antarctica.

The 2019 Homeward Bound voyage included Costa Rican diplomat and former Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Christiana Figueres on the staff.[14][15]

Films[edit]

Film Pending: "Beautiful Minds, Agents of Change" Producer: Greer Simpkin, Bunya Production

BEAUTIFUL MINDS (working title) explores the web of obstacles women and girls face in STEM and beyond, through the stories of those determined to overcome them. At its heart, the film interrogates the gendered lens through which we see the world, and the very human and flawed nature of the leadership that shapes it.
