Fadel Abdul Ghany Alshokfa (26 July 1978) born in Hama City, Syria. He is a Syrian Human Rights Advocate and the founder and chairman of the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR).

Career[edit]

Fadel Alshokfa[1], a graduate from Damascus University, and holds a master’s degree in International Law from De Montfort University in the UK. He has worked for nine years in the field of defending human rights in Syria, ever since the start of the popular uprising for democracy in March 2011. He is an author and co-author of and contributor to numerous reports and investigations, as well as written and oral presentations, concerning the human rights situation in Syria, covering a wide range of issues, including enforced disappearance, torture and sexual violence, extrajudicial killings, the targeting of medical facilities, and the use of chemical weapons and cluster munitions, as well as refugee rights and other subjects. He has also spoken frequently at the UN Headquarters, and in the main headquarters of the Human Rights Council, as well as in the European Parliament regarding the vast range of violations and crimes perpetrated against the Syrian people, as well as delivering lectures at several research centers. Mr. Alshokfa also provides training in the fields of human rights and international humanitarian law for a number of Syrian media and human rights activists, as well as contributing to training a large number of groups within the Syrian opposition on the rules of customary humanitarian law. As an independent consultant in the field of human rights in Syria who has participated in several rounds of Syrian peace talks in Geneva, he is frequently quoted and regularly interviewed by Arab and international media outlets.

Syrian Network for Human Rights[edit]

Syrian Network for Human Rights[2] (SNHR) is an independent, non-partisan, non-governmental, non-profit organization that doesn’t work by any ideology. SNHR was founded in June 2011 and works on documenting human rights violations in Syria and defending the human rights of the Syrian human being at the international level. SNHR was founded through an initiative by Mr. Alshokfa who is currently the chairman of the board of directors. SNHR is one of the most distinguished and prominent sources of information and references for all the analytical and statistical studies issued by the United Nations. Also, SNHR reports are highly credible to a number of Arab and international news agencies and regional and international human rights organizations. All of these groups rely on SNHR’s studies as references in their reports and analyses on human rights in Syria. SNHR is a member of the International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect (ICRtoP), the Euro-Mediterranean Network for Human Rights, and a member of the Transitional Justice Coordination Group.
