Faerschthaff or Faerscht (Luxembourgish: Färschthaff or Färscht) is a farmstead and a hamlet in Contern in Luxembourg.[1][2][3][4] Faerschthaff consists of 5 buildings, 4 of which are barn houses and the other 1 is a residential building owned by the farmstead's owner.[5][6] Faerschthaff is also atop the Trudlerbaach.[1][2][7] Faerschthaff is located on a slip road to the west of Contern[8][9] and has the same post code as the rest of the town of Contern, L-5316.[10][11]

History[edit]

Geography[edit]

Access[edit]

Faerschthaff and the surrounding roads, seen from a trail adjacent to the Shaltgen Forest, Contern

Faerschthaff is on a slip road which runs out west from the western end of the town. Within Contern it is named Rue de Prés however the naming stops once beyond the town itself.[12][13][8][better source needed] Faerschthaff can also be accessed from the north. From the CR 226 main road between Contern and Hesperance there is a slip road designed for usage for Tractors and other farming vehicles. This path runs around the Reulend forest and down a hill and connects with the path between Weiler-La-Tour and Contern in Faerschthaff. At this intersection, there is a waypoint marker which gives directions to Contern, Syren, Hassel and Itzig, all of the nearest towns in each direction.[14][15][better source needed] Finally Faerschthaff has access to Syren in the commune of Weiler-La-Tour, the road running west from Contern continues west over the commune border before sharply turning south and going to Trudlermillen and Syren.[16][17] Once heading south the trail takes on the name, rue de la source and goes through a forest.[18][19][better source needed] And the section in Weiler-La-Tour is unpaved. All of these roads have very restrictive road access with only residents of Faerschthaff, cars visiting the area, and Tractors allowed on them.[citation needed]

Surrounding Area[edit]

The Trudlerbaach flowing just east of Faerschthaff

Trudlerdall[edit]

The Trudlerbaach runs from the Shaltgen Forest in Contern to Syren where it meets the Syre. It passes directly through through Faerschthaff.[20][21][22][23] The Trudlerbaach runs south from the Shaltgen and in-between various fields before meeting the road between Contern and Faerschthaff.[21] From there it follows the road right up until Faerschthaff, then it crosses under a bridge and heads south just bypassing the town.[20] From there the river passes through some fields and then through a small grove before leaving the area.[24] Most of the other fields surrounding Faerschthaff are used for grazing milk cattle and one field adjacent to the Trudlerbaach is currently in use for growing wheat.

Infrastructure[edit]

The trees on the Farmland to the south of Faerschthaff

The area to the north of Faerschthaff has multiple power lines running south prior to the wires going underground as well as some with continue further sourth.[25][26] A trail runs to the south of Faerschthaff directly east of the bridge over the Trudlerbaach.[27] It first goes to a small unnamed forest before hiking west to link some farmland containing some trees with Faerschthaff, the barnyards and the rest of Contern.[28][29] Further up the road there is a small area for containing bees. Eventually the trail meets with the CR 226 main road linking Syren and Contern.[30]

Topography[edit]

Faerscthaff is located at a very low point in the terrain of just shy of 300 metres above sea level. On all sides of Faerschthaff the terrain rises. The the north following the path to the CR 226 main road between Contern and Itzig, there is a sharp incline up towards the Reulend. The trail leading up to the other part of the CR 226 near Syren is also a steep incline. Finally the trail linking Contern and Syren is a slight incline bound for Contern, which stays like that all the way until the area with the Church and the Town Hall in the centre of the town. In the other direction directly west of Faerschthaff there is a somewhat steep incline, however it doesn't last long and it quickly becomes a decline shortly before the border with Weiler-La-Tour. The Trudlerbaach runs south directly instead of via the route of the path due to the fact that that direction is the only one which would allow the river to flow downhill.[31]

Shrubbery[edit]

Demography[edit]

Faerschthaff is not directly listed in public census data as a place; therefore, the exact population of the settlement is unknown. It is estimated at around 4 but could vary by 1 or 2.[citation needed]

Construction Work[edit]

Over time, several constructions have been done in the area around Faerschthaff. For years on the section of the road linking Contern and Faerschthaff which ran parallel to the Trudlerbaach had a small metal railing acting as a guardrail because the Trudlerbaach itself was in a ditch. However by 2021 the railing had almost completely rusted away so most of it was torn off and replaced with a long metal column in the same place. Remnants of the old railing still remain.[citation needed]

The point where the Trudlerbaach flowing south meets with the road linking Contern and Faerschthaff is covered by a bridge-like structure. It had 2 guardrails, one for either side of it and a bench on the side facing northeast.[32] The structure however is only linked by road on one side and is a dead end. Underneath it however is a pipeline which flows into the Trudlerbaach, hence the river is much wider and filled with more water on to the west of the bridge compared to the northeast. In 2022 the pipeline and much of the other nearby pipes were dug up and the road was re-sited around the construction site. The bridge was also fenced off as well as part of the new wooded barrier blocking off the ditch. There have been cranes and vehicles on the site however it is currently unknown if new developments as a part of Contern itself are planned.[citation needed]
