Prelude
For years, the terrorist group Al-Shabaab has controlled vast swaths of the southern and central Somalia, launching dozens of bombings on the capital and many other major cities, often targeting hotels.[2] In the aftermath of The 2022 Somali presidential election, the Federal government cracked down on the financial and military assets of Al-Shabaab, crippling the jihadist group. Several offensives were launched by the government in Hirshabelle and Galmudug, liberating many towns and hundreds of villages.[3] In the weeks leading up to the capture of El Buur, as the army had moved closer to the town, they liberated villages around it, including Oswein, Wabxo, War Xoolo, Dac, and several other smaller villages.[4]
Capture
On August 25, the ancient district of El Buur in the Galgaduud region was captured by government forces, supported by local macawisley militia and international partners, after weeks of capturing towns near El Buur. Al-Shabaab forces that had controlled the town since 2017 have fled. El Buur district in the Galgaduud region was their last remaining stronghold in central Somalia.[5] The commander of Somalia's infantry confirmed to VOA that government and local forces have recently entered El Buur district after the Al-Shabaab militia fled from the district.[6]
