The Fanai are a chiefly clan among the Mizo people of Mizoram, northeastern India.[1][2] The Fanai chiefs trace their origins to an ancestor named Fanai who lived among the Zahau tribes in the Chin Hills of present-day Myanmar.[2] They are historically associated with the Lai (Pawi) group but maintained a distinct chiefly lineage in the southern Lushai Hills.[3]

The Fanai are subdivided into numerous sub-clans, including Thaai, Pakhup, Hniarthul, Hniarcheng, Torel, Zarep, Hrangtling, and Suakling, among others.[2] During the consolidation of Sailo power in the Lushai Hills, the Fanai allied with the Sailo chief Lallula during the Thlanrawn massacre, an event that ended Zahau dominance in the region and reshaped the political landscape of the hills.[3][4]

Several Fanai chiefs played prominent roles during the period of British colonial contact. Rorehlova, described as one of the greatest Fanai chiefs, established chieftainship after the Thlanrawn conflict and migrated westward into the Lushai Hills.[3] Zakapa, a descendant of Rorehlova, was a leading figure in the Lushai Rising against the British in the 1890s.[3] Darbilhi, a Fanai chieftainess, served as regent and British ally and gave up land for the construction of Fort Tregear in the southern Lushai Hills.[3]
