Fantasy Strike is an indie fighting game created by David Sirlin with the goal of making fighting games more accessible.[1] All characters in the game come from the wider Fantasy Strike Universe, which includes other Sirlin Games games such as Yomi, Pandante, Flash Duel, and Codex.
Concept[edit]
Building on the legacy of games such as Divekick or Rising Thunder (video game), Fantasy Strike reduces the complexity of executing actions - each of the buttons used is attached to one action while on the ground, and one related action while in the air.
The intent is that doing this removes having to practice just to get the basics of the game down [2], instead intending to allow the player to focus almost immediately on higher-level fighting game principles such as distancing ("footsie"), timing of moves, zoning, reading your opponent, setups, and strategy.
The simplified controls also reflect in other aspects of the game and its interface, including displaying character's health bars as discrete 'chunks' which are always fully removed by one successful attack (with a few attacks removing two), and throws being countered by not having any buttons pressed when the throw is executed. The controls even use a larger frame buffer than is standard for most games, to simplify the use of combos.
The game's marketing campaign emphasizes the value of this simplification, intending to be more accessible to newer players, while also being a game that can be easily played 'on the side' by experts in more advanced fighting games - often demonstrated by running tournaments intended for people who have never played the game before at conventions and events such as the Evolution Championship Series.
