Md. Farhanul Islam Bhuiyan (Template:Langx; 12 September 2006 – 18 July 2024), better known as Farhan Faiyaaz (Template:Langx), was a Bangladeshi student activist killed during the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement protests on 18 July 2024. His death intensified the movement on social media.
Early life and education[edit]
Faiyaaz was born on 12 September 2006 and studied at Dhaka Residential Model College from 3rd grade. He was set to take the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams in 2025.[1]
2024 quota reform movement and death[edit]
Faiyaaz was actively involved in the quota reform protests. On 18 July 2024, during the "Complete Shutdown", he was shot and killed in Dhanmondi amidst clashes with police and armed cadres from the Awami League. He was buried in Rupganj.[2]
Reaction[edit]
Faiyaaz's death sparked widespread outrage, intensified by posts from educationalists Munzereen Shahid and Ayman Sadiq. His death became a catalyst for renewed protests.[3]
Legacy[edit]
Faiyaaz's Facebook bio, quoting the song "The Nights": One day, you'll leave this world behind. So live a life you will remember., became popular posthumously.[4]
On 6 August 2024, the street near Dhaka Residential Model College was renamed to Shaheed Farhan Road.[5] The field beside the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban was renamed Shaheed Farhan Faiyaaz Khelar Maath in his honor.[6]
