Faruk Kugay
Faruk Kugay is a professional drifter in the American series, Formula Drift. Originally born in Poland to Polish and Turkish parents, he immigrated to the United States as a child, where he had an early love for cars. After learning to drift in 2002, he began working at and helping organize drift events in the Bay Area. In 2007, Faruk moved to Europe, and his career began to kick off. [1] He started teaching at events and soon began announcing and judging at them as well. In 2012, Faruk moved back to America to work towards his goal of competing in Formula Drift. After competing in Golden Gate Drift, a pro-am series, he gained his Pro license in 2014. After competing in the Pro 2 ranks of Formula Drift in 2015, Faruk earned his Pro 1 license.
In 2016, Faruk competed in the Pro 1 ranks of Formula Drift in a Nissan 240SX. He would switch to a BMW E92 for the 2018 series. In late 2018, Faruk would compete in Netflix's Hyperdrive (American TV series). Faruk and his team traveled to upstate New York for three weeks for the filming of the show, where car troubles would eventually cause him to be eliminated.
For the 2019 season, Faruk decided to take some time off from competition and do a demo series as he rebuilt his team and developed a new chassis for the 2020 season. In the first event of the season, The Motegi Super Drift Challenge, Faruk took third place.[2] During the summer, he would go on to film for three episodes for the Web series that Hoonigan produces. In August, Faruk and his team traveled to Road Atlanta for Gridlife (festival). While there, he did promotion with Netflix and the Atlanta Braves. He also got to get some seat time in with several Formula D pros and semi-pro drivers. In November, Faruk takes his BMW to the SEMA show in Las Vegas where he will be featured in the BorgWarner booth.
Faruk also runs the Sonoma Drift program at Sonoma Raceway where amateur, semi-professional, and professional drivers drift Wednesday nights during the spring, summer, and fall.
