Fascaplysin is a marine alkaloid based on 12H-pyrido [1–2-a:3,4-b′] diindole ring system.[1] It was first isolated as a red pigment from marine sponge Fascaplysinopsis bergquist sp. collected in the South Pacific near the Fiji island in 1988.[2] Fascaplysin possesses a broad range of biological activity including analgesic[3], antimicrobial, antimicrobial, antiviral, antimalarial, anti-angiogenic, antiproliferative activity against numerous cancer cell lines.[1]

Synthesis

The first total synthesis of fascaplysin was performed in seven steps from indole in 1990.[4] Fascaplysin and its derivatives can be synthesized from tryptamine[5][6][7][8], beta-carboline[9], indoleketones[10][11], indigo[12].
