Fauna of southeast asia
The fauna of southeast asia is all the animals that live in the region.
Mammals[edit]
Primates[edit]
Southeast asia is home to several kinds of primates, which consist of orangutans, gibbons, proboscis monkeys, macaque monkeys, and langurs.[1] As of 2016, there are 98 different species of primates in southeast asia.[2] In 2020, at least five primates were listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as critically endangered.[3]
Felids[edit]
Tigers are some of the most well-known wild cats from southeast asia.[4] Other wild cats also inhabit southeast asia. Sumatra is home to about 77 clouded leopards, with around 10,000 worldwide.[4] In December 2019, leopards went extinct in Laos.[5] Several organizations and groups focus on conservation of wild cats in southeast asia.[6]
Aquatic mammals[edit]
Aquatic mammals are often consumed as food in asia.[7] Southeast asia has the most endangered aquatic species out of the other regions in asia.[8] Some huge aquatic mammals, such as blue whales, inhabit southeast asia’s oceans.[9]
Threats[edit]
Animals in southeast asia face several threats. Snares are some of the biggest threats; both to the animals and indigenous peoples and local communities.[10] Many species from southeast asia are endangered also due to them being used as luxury food, medicine, tonics, and trophies.[11] Habitat loss is another major threat to southeast asian wildlife.[12] Southeast asia has some of the highest deforestation rates in the world.[12]
