Faye Mata (born September 2nd) is an American voice actress best known for her roles as Aqua in KonoSuba, Astolfo/Rider of Black in Fate/Apocrypha, and Petra Macneary in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. In addition to voice acting, she has historically been known as a professional gamer and often continues to participate in tournaments and streams for charity and other philanthropic causes. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, Mata was involved with fundraising to help support essential workers.[1] Subsequent fundraising events that Mata participated in included Girls Who Code, Black Girls Code and various charities under Voices for Change.
Early Life[edit]
Mata grew up in a small town in Wisconsin. Faye is the eldest of four children, and her parents are both doctors that were frequently out of the house working long hours. As a result, she often found herself entertaining her younger siblings through playing video games, watching television shows, and imitating their favorite characters. Faye described her early interest in anime and video games as a basis to pursue her future career. She also cited influence by Cartoon Network's Toonami programming.
During her life in high school, Mata was heavily involved in her school's theater program in addition to participating in gaming tournaments.
Her early interest in voice acting came from her involvement with community , where would collaborate with other aspiring creators to make amateur cartoons and video games. Mata also cited that she failed "the first round of AX Idol," an acting event that had taken place at Anime Expo in Los Angeles. She eventually moved to California to pursue the career "more seriously," attending several voiceover workshops. One of those workshops was run by veteran voice actor Tony Oliver.
Faye pursued a degree in Biology, and for a period of time took a white-collar desk job. It was happenstance that when Mata decided to attend Anime Expo again, Bang Zoom! Entertainment had established a new voice acting event. Mata was selected as one of the winners, thus starting her career in voice acting.
Gaming Career[edit]
In addition to her voice acting career, Mata has been heavily involved in various game tournaments. She particularly participated in Pokkén Tournament and Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments, achieving substantial notoriety in gaming circles.[2]
While she no longer continues to actively participate in tournaments, she continues to do charity streams via Twitch where she typically plays Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.[3] She has also hosted video game tournaments for charity. The most recent of these was for Voices for a Change where money was raised for The Bail Project.
Acting Career[edit]
Faye was always involved in school theater and drama clubs, but it wasn't until she became one of the Bang Zoom! open audition callback winners that she got involved in acting again. She was set to appear as a main character in a show called Heroes: Legends of the Battle Disks, where she voiced ten-year old Sophie Vulkay.[4] Unfortunately, according to Mata, the network associated with airing the show was shut down and therefore the series never aired in the United States market. The series was later picked up for streaming on Tubi years later in 2018.[5]
She indicated that she continued to take voice talent workshops during this time, up through the present to better refine her acting abilities. Upon updating her demo, she submitted it to studios and Mata's next major role came with the English dub of the multiple personality Occultic;Nine as Ryoka Narusawa.[6] Following this, her career began to pick up pace. More roles led to more events and conventions to attend.
Soon after she secured a role as the Goddess Aqua in Konosuba,[7] and later reprised that role in its sister title Isekai Quartet.[8] She proceeded to be cast as roles in fan favorite franchises such as the Fire Emblem franchise, League of Legends, Granblue Fantasy, and Fate/Apocrypha.
Philanthropy & Charity[edit]
Mata has contributed to the Black Girls Code, Girls Who Code, and Tyrone Gayle Scholars Program.[9] She is vocal in supporting programs or charities that represent minority youths. Regarding Girls Who Code, Mata described her specific passion for the program:
“Essentially, that's about introducing programs/options to them that were not normally obvious or available to us growing up, naturally inspiring them to pursue those paths if they find passion through them. e.g. A female coder is rare. Girls Who Code funds free after school programs that give girls a place to not feel pressured by typical barriers and learn about coding, and maybe one day after participating in these clubs, they'll go to college and become engineers in the future, because that's what they always wanted to do, rather than trying to introduce/force change of grown-ass stubborn adults. etc.”[10]
In addition to supporting these charities, she has also donated to Direct Relief during the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic. Using Twitch as the platform, she raised money by having viewers challenge her in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. where they could be chosen by random draw, or donate to the charity to be put into a priority queue.[1]
