Fearless and United – Guards (Fearless and United: Guards) also popularly known as FAU-G (FAU: G) is an upcoming Indian free-to-play online action multiplayer shooting mobile game application currently being developed by Bengaluru based gaming company nCore Games. FAUG will have a third-person shooter experience similar to PUBG. The game is meant to replace PUBG Mobile which was banned in India in September 2020 as a result of the ongoing skirmishes and political tensions between India and China.[1] FAUG was initially speculated to have been developed as a part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative which was proposed by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an effort to make India a self reliant and self sufficient nation.[2]

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is the brand ambassador of the game and also serves as a mentor to the development process.[3] It was reported that the game will serve as a tribute to the Indian Armed Forces. It is scheduled to be released by the end of October 2020 and will be available in Google Play Store and in App Store mainly for the Indian customers.[3][4]

Background[edit]

Government of India took tough measures on banning Chinese related apps, softwares and social media platforms following the diplomatic standoff between the two countries which erupted due to the border clashes. After banning Chinese apps such as TikTok, SHAREit and Helo[disambiguation needed], PUBG was also banned along with other 117 Chinese apps on 2 September 2020 in an unprecedented move by the Indian government which eventually triggered anger and shock among the gamers in India.[5][6] PUBG was accused of stealing and surreptitiously transmitting user data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India.[7][8] Prior to the indefinite ban, India was regarded as the largest and prominent market for PUBG with the country accounting for 175 million downloads and 24% of global users.[9] During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in India, the number of users and number of playing hours also surged gradually.[10]

Speculations[edit]

The official announcement regarding the development of the game was announced in September 2020 only after the official ban of PUBG. Expectations started to build up after the announcement of FAUG along with a meme fest and users in the social media platforms speculated that the game is being developed as an alternative to the PUBG. Reports also revealed that the people were being prompted to believe that the game development started only after the PUBG ban.[11]

The development of the game was also rumoured and speculated in the social media as a concept relating with the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The rumours were later downplayed by Akshay Kumar and game developers.[12]

Development[edit]

The CEO of nCore Games, Vishal Gondal revealed that the game has been under development since May 2020.[13] He revealed that developers were already recruited to develop the game even before the ban on PUBG Mobile. The first level of the game will be set in the backdrop of Galwan Valley in Ladakh where around 20 Indian soldiers were killed by the Chinese soldiers in June 2020 during a border dispute.[14] Vishal Gondal ruled out the speculations regarding the game and insisted that the game will not be competing with PUBG. He also insisted that the game will not be a battle royale.

According to nCore Games, around 20% of the total net revenue would be donated for the Bharat Ke Veer: India's Bravehearts initiative in a collaborative effort to support the families of Indian armed forces.[15]
