The Federated Shan States (Shan: မိူင်းႁူမ်ႈတုမ်ၸိုင်ႈတႆး IPA Mə́ŋ Hom Tǔm Jɯŋ Táɪ) is a self-declared government in exile that claims sovereignty over the Shan State in Myanmar and supports Shan seperatism.

Background[edit]

The Shan have been engaged in an independence struggle that has led to intermittent civil war within Burma for decades. Currently two main Shan armed insurgent forces operate within Shan State: the Shan State Army/Special Region 3 and Shan State Army/Restoration Council of Shan State. In 2005 the Shan State National Army (SSNA) was effectively abolished after its surrender to the Burmese government. Some SSNA units joined the SSA/RCSS, which has yet to sign any agreements, and is still engaged in guerrilla warfare against the Burmese Army.[1]

On 25 March 2005, Prince Tiger Yanghwe was elected as the President of the Federated Shan States and declared independence on 17 April later that year.

Government[edit]

Members of the government have mostly been elected by elders of the Shan community and the government bases its legitimacy on the Panglong Agreement. The Federated Shan States Government is closely alligned with the Restoration Council of Shan State and the Shan State Army - South.

Recognition and Relations[edit]

On 1 November 2005, a delegation of the Federated Shan States Government officially met with the then President of Vanuatu Barak T. Sobe in Hong Kong.[1]
