Federico Carro (born June 15, 1991)[1] is an Italian author known for creating a series of fantasy novels titled, The King of Light, and its spin-off, The Knight of Light. His fantasy work has had several editions in English and has won several awards in the literary and cinematographic fields through numerous Italian and foreign film festivals and competitions.[2][3][4]

Early Life[edit]

Childhood[edit]

Carro was born in La Spezia in June 1991. He grew up in Vernazza,[5] immersed in a landscape between the hills and the sea, which inspired the author in his subsequent works. He attended kindergarten and then elementary school in Vernazza, maturing his relationship with her childhood friend. Later, Carro enrolled in middle school in Riomaggiore while his friend attended it in La Spezia, separating them until they met later in high school. While he lived between school and the country's social life, Carro began to help his uncle in a restaurant in Vernazza. This work experience led him to be a waiter and subsequently start a career in various restaurants to support his work.

Highschool Period[edit]

Carro, after middle school, enrolled in the artistic high school of La Spezia, which started a dark period in his life. He later exploited those negative experiences with classmates for the basis of some characters in his fantasy series. During the second school year, Carro moved to Riccò del Golfo, which forced him to withdraw more into himself, giving birth to his first poems and his first literary experiences.

During the fourth year of high school, he began his first draft of his debut novel, L’Orto, which he was renamed Il Segreto del Verziere. Although the first few pages of the novel were performed almost on a whim, or simply for fun, Carro began to take his new aspect seriously as a writer and continued the novel and made it much more complex than it was initially.

In the summer that contrasts the end of the fourth grade with the beginning of the fifth grade, Carro met her childhood friend during a summer remedial course. Subsequently, at the beginning of the fifth year of high school, he learned of the disappearance of her friend, which led him to initially write a dedication and convert it into a poem which then transformed into his debut song. Shortly after, Carro moved to La Spezia before graduating from art school.

Post-School Period[edit]

After school, Carro began to work in the Cinque Terre National Park and later as a waiter for his uncle in Vernazza. During work, it was customary for him to put the radio on. During those periods, the radio played the song Hollywood Tonight by Michael Jackson, which he listened to several times during the day. The song led him to make the decision to imitate Michael Jackson in dance, which he performed several times in the restaurant and town.

Career[edit]

Composer and Singer[edit]

Carro took singing, arrangement, piano, and composition lessons. Shortly after, he released his first song, Come un Lampo, and dedicated it to his missing friend. Following that, he decided to launch his album Come un Lampo through Carrara-based independent recording studio, Nautilus Rec Studio, with the help of a sound engineer and other collaborators. Concurrently, he managed to finish other music videos, such as Lovely Storm and Replace my Soul. Carro met Marco Stanzani, who launched him on the Italian charts with his debut single Brucerei il fuoco per te, extracted from his first album, Come un Lampo. The single was placed in 36th position in the charts of independent Italian artists, 5th in the charts of emerging artists, and second for two weeks in the charts of Rockol's Absolut Beginners.

Meanwhile, as the single was broadcasted on hundreds of radios around Italy, Carro decided to shoot the book trailer of his second novel in Turin. During the shooting, he was contacted by a New York-based international record company Bentley Records, which is known for collaborating with record companies similar to Sony, Universal Music, and Warner Music. He decided to promote his second unreleased album abroad. Continuing his second music album, Bentley Records gave him the opportunity to shoot a video clip in New York for his upcoming release single Starlight. After the end of the aforementioned album, in the summer, Carro launched the first single, which gave the name to his second music CD and, subsequently released, Looking for Pain[6] on all Italian radios and many regional TVs. The single Starlight was placed on the Italian and European charts and was placed two positions below Adele's Hello and on Elisa's Hero's 76th position. Moreover, it was placed 51st in the Euro Indie Chart among the most listened-to singles throughout Europe.

Carro was invited to perform at the Navile theater, founded by Lucio Dalla, winning a certificate of merit for the most original musical part. Subsequently, the third single Rising Flame was released, which also was featured in magazines, including Vip, Visto, and Classic Rock. The video of Rising Flame[7] became the soundtrack of the program Ora Musica and the video of the week on Vuemme. Meanwhile, Carro was invited to Sanremo Sol[8][9] to present the record Starlight. Leading to that, he struggled with his literary projects and composed and wrote a musical album, The King of Light, which focused on instrumental music.

Author[edit]

Carro, while continuing to make his first musical album, released his debut book entitled Il Segreto Del Verziere. Upon completing the novel, he made a promotional video using the glimpses and the mysterious places that frame Vernazza. At the same time, from reading medieval stories and legends, Carro finds interesting glimpses of the city of Turin. While studying its archaicity and the mystery that surrounds it, he took inspiration for his second novel, Il Re Della Luce l’Ordine Degli Dèi Oscuri.

Carro got the opportunity to present his first novel at the Turin international fair. He worked parallel to the sequel and the English translation of his second novel. He created his first book in English, entitled The King of Light the Order of the Dark Gods, for which he was invited at the Turin International fair, presenting both his second novel in Italian and the one translated into English.

Following that, he launched the sequel of his second novel, Il Re Della Luce l’Esercito Leviatano. A short time later, he created another English version of his third novel, The King of Light the Leviathan Army. Waiting for the other planned projects to be finished, Carro was contacted by a North Carolina publishing house, Wisdom House, which was interested in producing his second novel in the United States and Canada. He worked with the publishing house to create a new book in English to be promoted abroad. Meanwhile, new projects were revealed, including a revision of the first novel Il Segreto del Verziere, which was warmly welcomed by a poet-writer, an RAI journalist, and university professor, Renato Minore. Minore agreed to write the preface of the manuscript, and following the new volume, Carro presented it to the major publishing houses in Italy.

From that project arose the English version, The Secret of the Orchard. Carro was contacted by James Essinger, a literary agent and owner of an English publishing house and graduate of Oxford. The latter proposed publishing his third novel, The King of Light the Leviathan Army, under The Conrad Press. Following that, he won second prize in an international literary competition. From that event, Carro decided to participate in literary competitions with his work. At the same time, he managed to write and publish his first collection of poems entitled Scintille di Vita la Forza Della Natura. He released his English-translated novel in England, The King of Light the Leviathan Army. Carro published the new edition of his first novel Il Segreto del Verziere as Le Vestigia Dell'antico Splendore through Luigi Pellegrini.

Shortly after, his second book, The King of Light the Order of the Dark Gods, was published by The Wisdom House in America. Carro won several international literary prizes in the first place and an honorable mention with his poems taken from his collection.

Future Projects[edit]

Carro is currently working on revising his novels, thus creating a new and more complete edition of his main fantasy saga. The book intends to be available in Italian and English versions from 2023.
