Fei Chen is a bioengineer and biologist known for inventing and co-inventing widely used spatial and single-cell genomics technologies. He co-invented expansion microscopy in 2015,[1] co-developed Slide-seq for high-resolution spatial transcriptomics in 2019,[2] and later co-led methods for in situ genome sequencing[3] and slide-DNA-seq for spatially resolved DNA profiling in tissues.[4] His group’s tools and findings have been covered in independent outlets including Nature technology features and industry reporting.[5][6][7]

Career

Chen is a core institute member at the Broad Institute and an associate professor in Harvard University’s Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology.[8] His laboratory develops technologies that connect single-cell genomics with spatial and temporal context in intact tissues, including Slide-seq and in situ genome sequencing.[8][9] Earlier, Chen co-invented expansion microscopy while a doctoral researcher, enabling optical resolution beyond the diffraction limit by physically expanding specimens.[1]

Independent overviews have situated Slide-seq and Slide-DNA-seq among the major approaches in spatial transcriptomics and spatial genomics.[10][11]

Education

Chen earned a PhD in biological engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked with neurotechnology researcher Edward Boyden.[8][12]

Research

Chen’s group builds and applies spatial and single-cell genomics methods to map cell types, states and genetic diversity in healthy and diseased tissues. Applications include developmental biology and tumor evolution, often combining RNA and DNA modalities in the same tissue sections.[4][3][2]

Awards and honors

  • NIH Director’s Early Independence Award (2017).[13]
  • Searle Scholar (2021).[14]
  • Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award at the Scientific Interface (CASI).[15]
  • NYSCF Robertson Stem Cell Investigator (2023).[16]
  • Allen Distinguished Investigator.[17]
