Felder Group is an Austrian mechanical engineering company with headquarters in Hall in Tyrol. Since its foundation in 1956, the company has been developing and producing machines for wood processing. The product range of the brands Felder, Format4, Hammer and Mayer is exported to 84 countries through 270 sales outlets.[1]

History[edit]

In 1956, Johann Felder founded the company Johann Felder jun. together with his wife in his workshop in his parents' house in Absam and in the same year he showcased the first woodworking machines at trade fairs in Vienna and Innsbruck. Due to the insufficient supply of castings, an in-house foundry was set up in the backyard of the family home in 1958.[2]

In 1961, the location at Salzbergstrasse 26 in Absam became the new headquarters of the mechanical engineering company. The first exports to Switzerland began in 1962, followed by the first series production of the BU 4 combination machine one year later. An automatic furnace was integrated into the 2000 m² foundry in 1975, and two years later the outsourcing of machine assembly to a new building ensured the company's renewed expansion. In 1979, the machine manufacturer installed the first CNC milling machine.

With 65 employees, the company relocated again in 1982 and found its present company location in Hall in Tyrol in what is now the Hall-Thaur industrial zone. In 1988, Johann Felder founded the first subsidiary, Felder Scandinavia, in Stockholm. With the new production possibilities, the company produced the world's first combination machines with a format sliding table in 1990.

In 1993, Felder opened its new EURO logistics centre and established the first Felderfactory branch, which started operations in Upper Austria in 1995. In 1997, Felder launched the Hammer brand for the low-price segment. The new Assembly Hall 2 should further increase capacity. Another brand launch followed in 2001: Format4, a premium brand for commercial and industrial use. In the years to follow the product range was expanded to include CNC processing centres, edgebanders, beam saws and heated veneer presses.

In 2000, the sole proprietorship Johann Felder was converted into a limited partnership and became the family owned company Felder KG through the participation of family members. At the beginning of the new millennium, the new powder coating plant was built and put into operation. In 2005, the logistics centre was expanded. In 2007, with the expansion of Assembly Hall 7 and the Flying Roof 4.5, the operating area was again increased by 11,300 m². In 2009, the first CNC and edge banding machines developed and produced in their entirety in Hall rolled off the production line. With the new manufacturing halls 1 and 8 as well as the expansion of the office and logistics complex with more than 1,600 m² of additional office space and a 30 m tall high-bay warehouse, the plant's effective area has been expanded to over 81,000 m² by 2018.

In 2019, Otto Mayer Maschinenfabrik, with its production site in Lombach, Germany, became part of Felder Group, bringing an expanded range of beam saws for wood, metal and plastics processing into the global service and sales network.
