Plot
The Browne children arrive at Windermere station by train. They used to stay at the farm frequently before the war, but haven't for a few years due to the war. They are picked up by Mr Jenks. Over the next few days, Jan bird watches, Sally helps Mrs. Jenks bake, and they all go on walks and help on the farm. The four older children plan a hike but get lost due to fog, ending up in the Ennerdale Valley. Unable to return the way they came, they spend the rest of the day hiking and catching lifts back. They sleep under some trees, where a policeman finds them and takes them to his cottage for the night. In the morning, the four Browne children sneak away, leaving a note, and want to get back on their own without the policeman's help. They hitchhike back to Coniston and meet Mr. Jenks, who drives them back. During some rainy days, they plan a camping expedition, with Sally acting as a non-camping liaison. Fortunately, the weather improves, and they prepare by buying food and getting their camping equipment ready. With the help of Bobbin, the farm horse, they take their supplies to Farmer Wilson's barn, their base camp. They set up camp between Esk Hause and Sprinkling Tarn. They create a band and leave a coded message at Fell Farm to make it more exciting for Sally. They camp there, surveying the River Esk, before climbing to the top of Scafell Pike for a night, returning to their main camp. Kay, Pat, and Hyacinth complete surveying the River Esk up to where it meets the road at Hard Knott. They spend their last night in Eskdale, but a storm forces them to crawl down in the early morning hours. To avoid the exposed return route via Esk Hause, they take an alternative route through Hard Knott in the pouring rain. A few days later, Bill Weatherby comes to the farm and takes Pat and Kay rock climbing at Dow Crag and the Langdales. Just before they leave for school, the Jenkses receive a letter from the children's parents asking if they can stay for the Christmas holidays. They accept, and everyone is happy.
