Feng Shui, also known as Geomantic Omen, is a 2011 Chinese television film, based on the novel Life of the Street (老街的生命) by Lin Jiapin, which is in turn based on one sentence from the local historical record that mentioned an event in the Second Sino-Japanese War where unarmed villagers in Xinning County, Hunan annihilated a small squad of Japanese soldiers.

Story[edit]

Ignorant and petty-minded, villagers of "Feng Shui Village" strongly believed in the practice of feng shui. "White Hair" (Zhang Yang), a beautiful young girl whose hair suddenly turned white, was ostracized and had to live in the mountains by herself. Her older sister (Liu Lei) had been lovers with "Second Master" (Niu Jun), but because their feng shui did not match, she had to marry "Fourth Master" (Ren Zhengbin) instead. "Fourth Master" is cowardly, worthless, and completely dependent on his wife to take care of their business and their son. Knowing his shortcomings especially compared to "Second Master", he is also very insecure even though his wife is faithful. Meanwhile, fed up by their superstition, "Second Master" becomes a traveling businessman and spends little time in the village.

One day in August 1945, "Second Master" returns to the village. In a conversation that ensues, a villager dares him to marry "White Hair" (as villagers believe she is a monster), and "Second Master" answers affirmatively without hesitation. "White Hair" is overjoyed to marry "Second Master", and they marry and spend a blissful night together in her hut in the mountains, to the great displeasure of the villagers. The next morning, the newlyweds discover an injured white man in the mountain, Johnny (Thomas Shanahan), an American pilot of the Flying Tigers shot down by the Japanese. They carry him to the hut. Meanwhile, a small Japanese squad, led by Yamamoto (Keiichi Yamasaki) and his adjutant (Shinji Kuroki), discover the American missing and go to the village. To intimidate them into submission, the Japanese brutally kill a few villagers and demand the American.

Old Bai (Liang Xiaoming), to save his family, leads the Japanese squad to "White Hair"'s hut. The American has already been carried away to "Fairy Rock" where some other villagers are hiding, but "White Hair" remains behind. Furious, the Japanese kill Old Bai and "White Hair", but not before "White Hair" kills a couple Japanese using a trap and a knife. The Japanese then take some villagers and head towards "Fairy Rock". "Second Master", discovering the death of his new bride, reaches "Fairy Rock" first, and encourages the villagers — who are still busy worshiping gods — to bravely fight the Japanese, but the craven and superstitious villagers remain hesitant and start debating whether to submit Johnny to the Japanese.

The Japanese threaten to execute the young son of "Fourth Master" if the villagers will not hand over the American, and his mother faints. At the critical juncture, the coward "Fourth Master" summons all his courage and volunteers to exchange himself with his son (who was actually the son of "Second Master"). After the child arrives at safety, "Fourth Master" bites Yamamoto's ear off and is killed. His wife runs towards him, and "Second Master" after her, and both are gunned down. The religious leader (Li Wannian) finally has enough. Smashing his fortune-telling sticks to the ground, he calls up all villagers to fight the enemy to the very end. Armed with sticks and rocks, the villagers finally overwhelm and kill all Japanese soldiers.
