Among his most notable achievements are the gold medal at IAU 24H Americas Championships in 2022..[1], the first place in the Copa IAU Sudamericana[2], and the third place in the Spartathlon 2023[3], a competition considered one of the most challenging ultramarathons in the world[4].

Fernando is part of the Equipo Ultra of Club Atlético Peñarol[5] and has been selected by the Uruguayan Athletics Confederation to represent the country in the Intercontinental Championship of the Americas 24 Hours in 2022[6] and in the World Championship Berlin Bernau[6].

Biography[7][edit]

His journey as a marathon runner began in 2018 when he was 42 years old and suffered a heart attack. After recovering, a cardiologist recommended that he engage in exercise and adopt a healthier lifestyle. This marked the beginning of his transformation into an ultramarathon athlete.

Despite being originally from Durazno, Fernando moved to Montevideo at the age of 18 for work reasons and has been in the capital ever since. He maintains a deep connection with his hometown and often runs wearing a red Durazno jersey as a way of giving back to his community.

Fernando's daily life is a testament to his dedication. He works as a butcher and balances his daily work with rigorous training sessions.

His day starts at 7 in the morning, he begins working at 8, and continues until 1 in the afternoon. Afterward, he takes the opportunity to train. Even on days when training involves double sessions, he perseveres, often conducting his second workout after 8 in the evening.

Over the years, he gradually increased the distances he ran, adapting his body to the demands of ultramarathons.
