Fernando Claro Salas (1893 – 1983) was a Chilean politician who served as a minister.[1]

He was a member of the Republican Militia from 1932 to 1934, during the second administration of President Arturo Alessandri. He later served as secretary-general of the presidential campaign of former Finance Minister Gustavo Ross in the 1938 Chilean presidential election.[1]

Under Radical President Gabriel González Videla, he was appointed the first Minister of Health, Welfare and Social Assistance of his administration, serving from November 1946 to April 1947. Two decades later, President Jorge Alessandri, Arturo Alessandri's son, appointed him Chilean ambassador to Argentina, a position he held from 1963 to 1964.[1]

Family

He was married to María Tocornal Ross, daughter of parliamentarian Juan Enrique Tocornal and a relative of Agustín Edwards Ross.[1]

They had three children: Patricio, a lawyer and member of the Liberal Party; María Regina, a historian and student of Eugenio Pereira Salas, who became a member of the Institute of Chile and was admitted to the Chilean Academy of History following a presentation on the events involving the Chilean Navy in 1931; and María Magdalena.[1]

In 1948, he acquired the building at 611 Esmeralda Street as a residence for his family and mother-in-law. In 1986, the building became the national headquarters of the Electoral Service of Chile.[2]
