Fidel Antonio Novoa Fuentes (23 January 1900 – 10 June 1981) was a Salvadoran physician, surgeon and politician.

Early life

Born on 23 January 1900. His parents were Dr. Fidel Antonio Novoa Meléndez and María Inés Fuentes Najarro.[1] He attended primary school at the Salvadoran Lyceum and secondary school at the Francisco Menéndez National Institute (INFRAMEN) in San Salvador, obtaining a bachelor's degree in science and art in 1917. Doctor of medicine and surgeon, degree obtained at the University of El Salvador in 1926, with post-graduate studies in the urinary tract in Paris, France in 1926, at the Necker clinic. His doctoral thesis was published on February 20, 1926 and is entitled: "Treatment of Chronic Diarrhea to Protozoan by Estovarsol".[2]

Dr. Novoa Fuentes married Mercedes Antonia Arciniegas Villatoro, by civil wedding on 27 April 1928 [3] and by Catholic ceremony on 28 April 1928 [4][5] at the old San José Church which burned, in downtown San Salvador. They had four children: Fidel Antonio[6] (City mayor of San Salvador in 1964)[7], Ricardo Armando[8], Alfredo[9], and Mercedes[10].

Dr. Novoa Fuentes headed the Novoa Pharmacy since 1922, due to his father's passing. He visited New Orleans in 1926 [11] and New York in 1927 [12] and 1953.[13] He was an ad honorem physician and headed the Hospice for Orphans, later called the National Children's Home, from 1928 to 1945.

Political career

Dr. Fidel Antonio Novoa Fuentes was elected as a congressman of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador in 1929.[14] [15]

Dr. Novoa Fuentes' legacy belongs to a family that has earned local political notoriety in public service in El Salvador in the 19th and 20th centuries: his grandfather Adolfo Novoa Méndez was Trustee of the City Council (Síndico in Spanish) of Sensuntepeque Municipality in 1880, his father Fidel Antonio Novoa Meléndez was President of the Legislative Assembly in 1903 and 1912, and both his sons Fidel Antonio Novoa Arciniegas was the Mayor of San Salvador in 1964 and Ricardo Armando Novoa Arciniegas was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Justice of El Salvador in 1989.

Death

He died in San Salvador, at the Policlinica Hospital; surrounded by his family.[16]
