Fifteen Seconds is a company based in Graz, Austria, that hosts the eponymous Fifteen Seconds Festival, a yearly interdisciplinary business conference,[1] as well as a smaller event series, called Fifteen Seconds Unlimited.[2] Both the conference-style event as well as the “Unlimited” series have recently produced spinoffs in other cities and countries.[3][4]

Fifteen Seconds was established in 2013, originally under the name of Marketing Rockstars, by founders Stefan Stücklschweiger and Thiemo Gillissen. In March 2017, the Graz-based design agency moodley took a 25% share of the firm to act as a strategic partner. In January 2018, Fifteen Seconds and moodley formed a corporate group together.[5]

History[edit]

Founded as Marketing Rockstars in 2013, the firm hosted its first "festival"-branded event, a marketing conference with approximately 1,300 attendees, in June 2014. In its second iteration the following year, and still under the same name, Marketing Rockstars Festival attracted roughly 2,000 guests.[6]

In November 2015, the company announced that it would rebrand as Fifteen Seconds, extend the event to span two days and place its thematic focus at the "intersection of business, innovation, and creativity." Consequently, the next iteration of the event, taking place in June 2016, was hosted as "Fifteen Seconds Festival" for the first time and tagged a "business conference" rather than a marketing conference.[7]

The following two years, 2017 and 2018, saw two more iterations of the event, attracting 4,000[8] and 5,000 attendees,[1] respectively.

2018 also marked the introduction of a smaller event series, Fifteen Seconds Unlimited. Branded "community events," the Unlimited series offers evening events with a small number of speakers—focused around one topic—for a few hundred guests.[9] The first Unlimited event took place in May 2018 in Graz,[10] followed by a second in September of the same year[11] and another one in March 2019.[12]

A planned Fifteen Seconds Festival in Detroit in September 2018[13] had to be canceled due to ongoing problems with visa issuance.[14] Instead, a smaller Unlimited event was held on 20 September 2018 in Detroit.[15]

For its 2019 edition in Graz, Fifteen Seconds Festival introduced three new topical areas alongside its existing focus on business: science, mobility, and technology. The festival, from 6 to 7 June 2019 at Stadthalle Graz, offered a total of 8 stages, 15,000 square meters of expo area and attracted 6,127 attendees—the highest number of attendees to date.[16][17]

Meanwhile, the internalization efforts of the company continue. Plans include hosting events in Detroit, New York, Toronto, Sofia, and Istanbul in 2019 and 2020 according to statements from Fifteen Seconds' founders,[3][4] although no further details have been announced yet.

Fifteen Seconds Festival[edit]

Fifteen Seconds Festival takes place in Graz annually at the beginning of June.[18]

The interdisciplinary conference is conceived to serve to a dual purpose, offering both the transfer of knowledge and networking opportunities for attendees. Speeches and keynotes are delivered on a number of stages (eight in 2019), while a 15,000 sqm "Expo" area is designed for visitors to get to know exhibitors, network and make connections.[19]

While the event has traditionally had a strong topical focus on marketing and business, in 2019 the platform was extended by introducing additional areas dedicated to science, mobility, and technology.[19]

High value is placed on experience design, with the organizers stating that the whole atmosphere at the event should be that of a festival, which is also why the conference is dubbed that. The motivation behind Fifteen Seconds Festival's event design, according to its founders, is to make the event stand out against other conferences and trade fairs.[3]

Fifteen Seconds Festival is targeted to a broad audience, ranging from students to C-level executives, according to the organizers.[3]

Fifteen Seconds Unlimited[edit]

Fifteen Seconds Unlimited is a quarterly to semiannual community event series taking place in Graz and other cities. Each event consists of three speakers giving input to one "burning topic" which is followed by discussion and networking.[3]

The first-ever event of the Unlimited series—on the subject of "Career Hacks"—took place at Orpheum Graz in May 2018. Subsequent events in Graz took place in October and November 2018.[9] An Unlimited-branded event was also held in Detroit in September 2018.[15]

According to its organizers, the Unlimited event series will continue in Graz and other cities in 2019 and 2020.[3]
