History
Fiji gained independence from the United Kingdom on October 10, 1970. Formal diplomatic relations with Australia began immediately. Australia and Fiji are natural partners. To reflect changing priorities and challenges, in 2023 we are renewing our commitment to pass down to the next generation a partnership they will be proud to inherit. The Vuvale Partnership: A landmark agreement was signed, naming the relationship Vuvale (the Fijian word for "family"). This established a framework for deeper security, economic, and people-to-people ties. Under Prime Minister Rabuka (elected in late 2022), the mission has overseen an "elevated" partnership, focusing on climate change, labor mobility (PALM scheme), and regional security.
- 1987 Coups: Following the coups led by Sitiveni Rabuka, Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth. Australia briefly suspended aid, and diplomatic status was downgraded until a republican government was stabilized.
