Filey Museum

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Filey Museum is a local museum in Filey, North Yorkshire, northern England.

History[edit]

Filey Museum was originally two single-storey cottages with thatched roofs, built in the late 17th century. One cottage was a farm until the 1960s, the other a private dwelling and a shop. With eight rooms of displays, including a collection of Walter Fisher photographs (Walter Fisher was a local Victorian photographer, who recorded Filey life in the late 19th early 20th century) - plus a secret garden with replica Bait Shed, hand pumped Fire Engine and a Filey Coble.

In the late 1960s, the cottages were declared unfit for human habitation and were to be demolished. Filey Urban District Council invited the Filey Local History Society to establish a museum. After much hard work by the Council and the Filey Lions Club, Filey Museum opened in 1971. The buildings are Grade II listed.

The buildings are the oldest domestic buildings in Filey, as shown by the date 1696 above one of the doors.

The museum is run entirely by volunteers and celebrates it’s Golden Jubilee in 2021.

Recently Filey Museum has won several awards including the Small Visitor Attraction of the Year Award in The Discover Yorkshire Coast Awards and the Visitor Attraction of the Year Yorkshire Moors and Coast Tourism Award (under 50,000 visitors).
