The FilBasket or Filipino Basketball League is the newest basketball league in the Philippines founded by ex-UAAP star Jai Reyes in August 2021. The infant league aims to provide a new venue for basketball players, either young bloods or veterans, to play the game they most loved while earning at the same time. It launched its first season on October 28, 2021 featuring eleven basketball teams and ran for a period of 26 days, including the MPBL Champions Davao Occidental Tigers and San Juan Knights. According to its founder Jai Reyes, the first tournament is for the purpose of helping the players, coaches, staff and officials to have an opportunity to earn an allowance after almost two years in the lockdown where sports are not allowed. Organizers assured the public that they monitored the health and safety of participants through COVID-19 testing. Filbasket secured approval from SBMA and the IATF for a bubble tournament at the Subic Bay Gymnasium where the MPBL also held its playoffs last March 2021.
