FilmQuest Festival is an annual.[1] international film festival event held in Provo, Utah[2] that focuses on genre film, particularly science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other popular sub-genres such as westerns, animation, thrillers, etc.[3] The festival was founded in 2014 by filmmaker Jonathan Martin[4]

Cthulhu Trophy[edit]

The festival is known for its award, the FilmQuest Cthulhu Trophy[5]. Designed by Ryan Peterson[4] and manufactured by Society Awards, the award is given annually to winners from the festival's competition film lineup. Notable individual FilmQuest Cthulhu Trophy winners[6] include Doug Jones[7], Pedro Pascal[8], Academy Award winner Joel Harlow[8], Primetime Emmy winner Brett Goldstein[9], Minnie Driver[8], Frankie Muniz[10], Adam Egypt Mortimer[10], Alyssa Sutherland[10], Patrick Schwarzenegger[10], Academy Award nominee Kathleen Quinlan[8], Kyle Gass[11], Sophie Thatcher[8], Martin Starr[12], and Paul Urkijo Alijo[8].

Best Feature Film winners have included Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil[8], Daniel Isn't Real[10], The Mortuary Collection[13], The House at the End of Time[9], The Free Fall[14], Moon Garden[12], and Crawlspace[7].

Accolades[edit]

FilmQuest has frequently been recognized as one of the top active film festivals in the world. MovieMaker Magazine has named FilmQuest as one of its "Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee" five times to its annual list in 2023, 2022[15], 2021[16], 2017[17], and 2015[18]. The publication recognized the festival as one of the "25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World"[19] in 2023, and was also named by it as one of the "World's 50 Best Genre Festivals" in 2021[20], and as one of their "30 Bloody Best Genre Fests in the World" in 2019[21]. Horror news website Dread Central has recognized FilmQuest twice as one of "The Best Horror Festivals in the World" in 2022[22] and 2021[23].

Regionally, the festival has been recognized by Utah's Best of State competition as Utah's "Best Film Festival" six times in 2023[24], 2022[25], 2021[26], 2020[27], 2019[28], and 2018[29]. Salt Lake City Weekly awarded FilmQuest with its Arty Award as Utah's "Best New Film Festival" in 2014[30].
