Film Training Manitoba (FTM) is a non-profit organization headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with offices located in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District. The company provides workforce and human resource development to build a highly skilled and adaptable film and television industry in the province of Manitoba.[1]

History[edit]

FTM was founded in 1999 and is a member of Manitoba’s sector council program.[2] During the organization’s initial years, 100 to 200 administrative and technical workers completed its training annually, but yearly attendance has since grown, with over 1,400 individual participants in 2019.[3]

FTM collaborates with members of the film and television industry to identify needs and offer industry-driven, skill-based training in an effort to fill labor gaps.[4]

Select instructors have included: Jaws screenwriter Carl Gottlieb[5] Art director Jean-André Carrière [6], screenwriting consultant Linda Seger [7], and UCLA's former head of the screenwriting program Richard Walter (writer). [8]

FTM provides courses required for membership in recognized industry organizations and unions, which aids in providing training for people living in rural areas of Manitoba. FTM also delivers career development presentations and work experience opportunities in partnership with other organizations in the Manitoba film and television industry.[9]

In 2016, FTM was awarded ACTRA Manitoba's Wayne Nicklas Award for an outstanding contribution and ongoing commitment to Manitoba’s film and television industry.[10]

Operations[edit]

In 2019, the organization promoted Adam Smoluk to the Managing director position.[11] To recognize the company’s twentieth anniversary, FTM launched a full company rebranding which was created by Winnipeg-based Vincent Design.[12]

The organization partners with numerous Manitoba secondary[13] and post-secondary schools as well as Manitoba's northern communities. [14] In 2020, FTM launched a new workforce development partnerships with the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT) [15] and Red River College. [16] This included working with MITT to launch the ACTION! Program Phase 2 to help students find jobs and careers in the film industry. The program allowed 200 MITT students and alumni to access short-term training including industry-accredited courses, career coaching, and in-class training. [17]

FTM's training is instructed by working film professionals to encourage people to embark on careers in the Manitoba film industry.[18]
