Filthy Apes and Lions is the third solo studio album by The Killers bassist Mark Stoermer.[1] The record was released through his label, St. August Records, on November 17, 2017.[2] “Filthy Apes and Lions” was the first single released on October 16, 2017. The music video for “Filthy Apes and Lions” was directed by Lee Hardcastle and was featured on Adult Swim's Saturday night anime block, Toonami.[3][4]
Background, development and recording
Mark started writing the lyrics for the first single, “Filthy Apes and Lions,” with just the title in mind, which was inspired by a line in another song he had written - “Beautiful Deformities”.[5][6] Stoermer explained the initial start of writing the song with Clash Magazine - “Without originally having a concept in mind, one seemed to reveal itself after the fact. To me, it painted some sort of apocalyptic picture, in either a zoo or the jungle”.[7] The “Filthy Apes and Lions” music video tells the tale of a mad scientist working in a dilapidated zoo who goes on a rampage and turns the animals against humans.[8]
A long-form video version of the second single from the record, “Beautiful Deformities (The Monastic Controversy): Acts I-V” was released with Yahoo. In the interview with Yahoo, Stoermer explained “the lyrics for “Beautiful Deformities” are based off an art history story from the 12th century, in the form of a dialogue between two monks regarding censorship/art suppression,” When asked about the inspiration behind the video, Stoermer stated that “The video, inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator”, it takes this theme to the 20th century, referring to totalitarian regimes and the censorship they imposed.[9] The video was directed by Charlotte Kemp Muhl and released on November 8, 2017, but the song was originally released on a 7” pressing in November 2016, which was given to fans as a thank you for buying the Dark Arts vinyl bundle.[10][11][12]
The third single released from the record was “The Perennial Legend of Dr. Mabuse”.[13] The video for the single was directed by Mark Stoermer and Yoshi Sodeka.[14] The video was featured on Soundsphere magazine.[15]
Another single from the record is a cover of “Dwarfish Trumpet Blues,” which is originally by Tyrannosaurus Rex. Stoermer's rendition of the song was accompanied by a claymation video directed by Rafael Bonilla.[16] Stoermer considers his rendition as a much different interpretation from the original, acoustic arrangement.[6]
In another interview with The Young Folks, Stoermer discussed the inspiration behind the sixth song on the record, “Mica Rea”. He said that the name is an anagram of America, and Mica Rea is a character embodying the dark side of the American dream.[6]
Themes and influences
The Filthy Apes and Lions record has been described as a collection of psychedelically addled prog/chamber pop.[17] Stoermer took suit to the habit of the artists in the 60s, where artists would often feature a cover on their record.[6]
Release
Filthy Apes and Lions was released on vinyl on October 13, 2017, and digitally and on CD on November 17, 2017, through Stoermer's label St. August Records.[2] With the release of the record, 100 hand numbered and signed vinyl gift boxes were sold.[18]
