Final Combat (Chinese: 大冲锋), was a Chinese first-person shooter game developed by Xunlei Games. The game was launched in 2011[1], and was eventually shut down in 2018.[2] It faced criticism due to its similarity to Valve's Team Fortress 2.[3][4][5]
Gameplay[edit]
Final Combat was a class-based shooter, and included different game modes such as capture the flag, king of the hill, arena, payload, and team deathmatch.[6][4][7] Players could purchase weapons, powerups, and hats through the game's item shop.[8] The game featured an achievement system.[9]
Game modes[edit]
Final Combat contained ten game modes:
- King of the Hill was when the red and blue teams had to compete to occupy a fixed control point for a total of 3 minutes and 30 seconds in order to win.[10]
- Team Deathmatch was a mode where a party had to reach a certain number of kills in order to win within a time limit. If time ran out, the team with the most kills would win.[10]
- Last Man Standing was a mode where one team had to eliminate the other team within a round without respawns.[10]
- Payload was a timed mode where one team had to push a cart to the end of the track, with the other defending. Teams would swap roles the next round. If both teams pushed the cart to the end at the same time, it would be a tie.[10]
- Knife Battle was a mode where red and blue teams could only use melee weapons. The team that reached the kill limit first would win. If time ran out, the team with the most kills would win.[10]
- BOSS Battle was a mode where one randomly selected player would turn into the BOSS, a powerful enemy. The rest of the players would need to kill the BOSS to win. If the BOSS killed the other players, then they would win.[10]
- Hero was a mode where red and blue teams could ony use melee weapons, except for one player who was designated as the "hero", who would be allowed to use a gun. Other players would need to protect their hero and kill the opposing one in order to win.[10]
- Bomb Defusal was a mode where blue team had to plant a bomb at designated sites, with red defending. If blue could defend the bomb until exploded, they won. If red stopped blue from planting the bomb, or defused it after it was planted, they would win.[10]
- Doomsday Evolution was a mode similar to BOSS battle, where someone would turn into a Mecha BOSS per 4 players present. The Mecha BOSSes would attempt to eliminated non-BOSSes, and players could pick up small boxes to turn them into mechs or turrets to try and defeat the Mecha BOSSes.[10]
- Item War was a mode where red and blue teams would try to eliminate each other. They could pick up items provide buffs to themselves, or drop items to provide debuffs to the enemy team.[10]
Classes[edit]
Final Combat had six base classes to choose from:
- Rocketman utilized rocket launchers to shoot from long distances and hit wide areas.[11]
- Heavy machine gunner used miniguns to deal heavy damage to enemies.[12]
- Sniper used sniper rifles to attack enemies from a long range. Sniper rifles would have a charge time to deal more damage.[13]
- Assaulter uitilzed assault rifles.[14]
- Pyro would utilized flamethrowers to light enemies on fire up close.[15]
- Medical soldier used crossbows to damage enemies and a healing gun to heal teammates.[16]
Story[edit]
The game takes place sometime in the 21th century on Earth, with the world experiencing economic downturn, international disasters, war, and talks of doomsday, as people began to lose hope in the world. A number of individuals formed a group investigate these occurances, and traveled around the world to reveal the truth behind them. As word spread about their deeds, especially in combat, many others joined them. The group came to be known as "Storm Team" or "FCT: Final Combat Team," belonging to no nation or creed.[17]
Controversy[edit]
Final Combat faced criticism due to its similarity to Valve's Team Fortress 2. Eric Jou of Kotaku wrote, "At first glance, Final Combat looks exactly like a cheap Team Fortress 2 rip with two female classes. The characters look like uninspiring copies of Valve's own creations, and the game play looks like every other FPS to date."[4] Cheng Hao, the co-founder, vice chairman and CEO of Xunlei Games, addressed the cricism by acknowledging the similarities, but stated the biggest difference between the two games was that they were targeting different audiences. He would also state that the game modes, map sizes, and the overall "rythm" of the game are different.[1]
