Finnegan Biden (born September 9, 2000) is the granddaughter of U.S. President Joe Biden. As a member of the First Family of the United States, and previously as a member of the Second Family, she accompanied her grandparents on official visits to China, Sierra Leone, Germany, and Spain. During her grandfather's 2020 presidential campaign, she hosted events with the Young Democrats of America and the Democratic National Committee to encourage young people to vote. In 2023, she attended the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla with her step-grandmother, First Lady Jill Biden, becoming the first members of an American president's family to attend the coronation of a British monarch.

Early life and family[edit]

Biden was born on September 9, 2000.^[1] She is the second of three daughters of Hunter Biden and Kathleen Buhle.^[1]^[2] She is the sister of Naomi and Maisy Biden and a half-sister of Navy Joan Roberts, from her father's relationship with Lunden Roberts, and Beau Biden IV, from her father's second marriage to Melissa Batya Cohen^[3]^[4]^[5] She was named after her great-grandmother, Catherine Eugenia Finnegan Biden.^[6]^[1] Biden is the granddaughter of Joe Biden and his first wife, Neilia Hunter Biden.^[7]^[8] She is the step-granddaughter of Jill Biden.^[9]^[10] Biden is of English and Irish descent.^[11]

Education[edit]

Biden attended the Sidwell Friends School, a private school run by the Society of Friends, where she was a member of the lacrosse team.^[12]^[13] She started a campaign to change the school's dress code, with female students attending school wearing t-shirts saying with "I'm not the distraction" printed on the front.^[14]^[1] The campaign led to a school forum and the abolition of the dress code.^[14] She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2021 with a degree in history with a concentration in American studies and a minor in art history.^[14]^[1] While an undergraduate student, Biden led a successful campaign to push an extension of the university's pass/fail sign-up deadline for online classes to the last day of the spring semester to assist students during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.^[14]^[15] Biden wrote the petition to extend the deadline on Change.org, which received over 3,500 signatures.^[14]

Public life[edit]

In 2013, Biden accompanied her grandfather, then the Vice President of the United States, on an official trip to Beijing.^[16]^[17] In 2014, she accompanied her step-grandmother on a visit to Sierra Leone. In 2015, she accompanied her grandfather on an official trip to Berlin, where he spoke at the Munich Security Conference.^[9]

She partook in her grandfather's 2020 presidential campaign, attending various campaign events around the country.^[1]^[18]^[19] She also participated in text bank events hosted by the Democratic National Committee and hosted an event with Young Democrats of America to encourage young people to vote.^[20]^[1]^[21] Along with her siblings and cousins, she was featured in a video, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, at the 2020 Democratic National Convention.^[22]

In January 2021, she attended the Inauguration of Joe Biden with her family.^[23]^[24]^[25] In May 2022, Biden accompanied her grandparents on an official visit to Spain to attend a dinner for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.^[26]^[27]

In May 2023, Biden accompanied her step-grandmother, as a state dignitary, to the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in London.^[6] Prior to the ceremonies, Biden and her step-grandmother met with Catherine, Princess of Wales at the reception for world leaders and dignitaries at Buckingham Palace and with Akshata Murty, wife of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, at 10 Downing Street.^[28]^[21]^[29] During the coronation service at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023, they were seated next to Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska.^[6]^[30] It was the first time members of an American president's family attended the coronation of a British monarch.^[31] She received positive media attention for the custom pastel yellow dress and cape by Markarian and Gigi Burris tulle rose (the official flower of Washington, D.C.) headband that she wore to the service.^[28]^[32] Her step-grandmother, wearing blue, coordinated with her to represent the colors of the Ukrainian flag, reportedly as a gesture to show support for Ukraine in the Russo-Ukrainian War.^[28]^[33] On May 7, Biden and her step-grandmother attended the Coronation Big Lunch at Downing Street, hosted by the Prime Minister.^[34]^[35]^[36]
