Books
Fintech Nation Books chronicled Singapore's evolution as a fintech hub and recognizes founders, community leaders, and startups. They were created to document and tell how Singapore became successful as a fintech hub, with no clear, consistent way to understand the process before. Therefore, the book's authors set out to develop a storyline of how and what made Singapore a successful fintech hub and track historical development to identify common themes, attributes, and characteristics that explain the current state and possible impact on the future.
Authors Varun Mittal and Dr Lilian Koh analyzed all the fintech investment transactions to identify and prove the correlation between programs undertaken by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to identify high-potential companies and their impact on success. In addition, they conducted 70 primary interviews, bringing together the stories and journeys of founders and enablers of the fintech ecosystem, including access to capital, customers, talent, and policy initiatives which have made them and Singapore successful. They also analyzed key regulatory policy decisions and the background of how some of the foundation blocks of Fintech Nation were set up and evolved.
The first book traced Singapore's journey from 2015 to 2020, starting with establishing regional hubs and internationalizing fintech innovation, with a foreword by Monetary Authority of Singapore Managing Director Ravi Menon and an opening chapter by the Chief Fintech Officer of MAS. The first book was titled, “Relentless Pursuit of Excellence,” and it reflected upon the spirit of Singapore and its fintech community to pursue constant innovation and improvement. In 2023, authors published the sequel to the first fintech nation book, looking at how Singapore could strengthen its position as a Fintech Hub in a post-COVID world facing sky-high inflation and geopolitical challenges with multiple wars. The second book was titled, “Excellence Unlocked in Singapore”, which focused on how Singapore and its community bounced back and focused on being a beacon of success for Asia.
Fintech Nation book is also credited with coining the term, Singanomics, which is trademarked by the author, Varun Mittal.
Singanomics is a unique system of economics that is embodiment of right public private partnership for inclusive and sustainable development. In such a system market forces define the majority of outcomes and the progressive government develops a broader structure of guidelines and policy investments to enable innovation and competition to develop for betterment of consumers and social order.
