Firehouse Art Gallery

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Waimea Firehouse Art Gallery provides a place for Big Island artists to exhibit and sell their work. Run by artists and local volunteers, it offers mixed media from watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings to glass, sculpture, woodwork, photography and jewelry. The Gallery also offers workshops and classes.[1]

Shows and Exhibitions

The Gallery hosts rotating themed shows in the front gallery and mini shows in the back gallery. Although the themes of the shows vary throughout the year, the February theme celebrates the town’s Cherry Blossom Festival, the Annual Na ‘opio Youth Art Show is on display every March[2], and the juried Founders Show (originally named the Helen M. Cassidy Memorial) is presented every October[3][4].

History

The Firehouse Art Gallery was opened by the Waimea Art Council (WAC) when the original Waimea firehouse and bunkhouse was vacated by the Waimea Civic Center in 1980. WAC, whose mission is to promote the arts, encourage artists, and provide a forum for art-related community events, was founded in 1974 by a group of residents whose awareness of the importance of art inspired them to create a venue for art and artists and a way to connect people through enrichment offerings. The Waimea Arts Council is an entirely volunteer organization, supported by grants, dues, and contributions from artists who sell their artwork, as well as donations from the general public.[5]

Murals

The firehouse and bunkhouse are adorned by several murals. A large mural on the side of the building was completed by the students at Kanu O’Ka Aina school and their teacher Scott Plunkett, along with additional assistance from Tom Mehau, a well-known local artist and founder of the Waimea Artists’ Guild. The mural is a tribute to the canoe culture of the island community. Other murals on display on other outside walls were donated to the council in the 90s and painted by students of St. Joseph’s School in Hilo and member artist Terry Bensch.[6][5]
