Fishtank, also known as fishtank.live, was an online 24/7 interactive reality show created by comedians Sam Hyde and Jet Neptune. Similar to that of Big Brother, Fishtank's premise was the confinement of 8 random individuals (referred to in the show as the "Fish") within a house (referred to in the show as the "tank") over the course of 6 weeks in competition for a cash prize, awarded to the contestant who survives the various eliminations that are carried out irregularly throughout the show's run. However, it differed in that it was streamed 24/7 from an independently hosted site via 10 fixed-angle cameras all independently accessible, as opposed to the scheduled format of other reality shows. The selection of contestants was carefully curated to include individuals with peculiar and intriguing personalities, with the aim of generating captivating content for viewers.[1][2]
Premise
In Fishtank, contestants are placed in an isolated environment where they interact with each other in the absence of external stimuli. This creates an environment that is conducive to unfiltered, raw interactions between the contestants. As an interactive show, Fishtank offers viewers the opportunity to engage with the contestants through a variety of means, such as participating in polls, sending text-to-speech messages, or the use of "fishtoys": actions that physically interact with the tank or contestants, for example having the staff dump out a trash can in the house or the confiscation of a contestant's bed. All of these are possible through the spending of purchasable virtual tokens on the website. Hyde (known to the contestants by the pseudonym Jason Goldstriker) and the producers will occasionally enter the house to have the contestants perform challenges.[3]
Reception
Fishtank amassed tens of thousands of concurrent viewers throughout its airing, with peaks as high as 30,000. The show, while lasting 42 days, had multiple "false endings" during runtime, with neither the Fish nor the audience knowing if they were real or not.[4] The show has been compared by some to the Stanford prison experiment.[5]
Cast
Jason Goldstriker
Played by Sam Hyde, Jason is the master of the show, playing the role of the opulent, loud and confrontational businessman. Prone to fits of rage, Jason often bursts into the house to propose new challenges to the contestants and to wreak havoc, destroying the house and causing discomfort among both Fish and Sharks alike.
Jet / Sharks
Jet is the producer of the program, and mainly handles the technical side. The sharks, on the other hand, are mysterious masked characters whose job it is to torment the contestants through actions, sometimes concocted on their own, or sometimes requested by viewers through aforementioned fishtoys. When not on camera, the sharks often dwell in the basement, monitoring the footage and making sure things run smoothly.

Contestants
The eight main contestants of the first season were ordinary young adults with intriguing and peculiar personalities, selected with the goal of creating a more captivating show for viewers. The only information about them came from the brief text descriptions provided on the program's website (sometimes containing false information), helping to maintain an aura of mystery and increasing the desire to get to know them through their behaviors during the duration of the program.

During the program, additional characters (called "Freeloaders") were introduced into the house. They could not participate in the competition for the final prize money, but were able to interact with the fish, and, should they succeed in tormenting one enough to make him leave the house, they would receive $1,000. Most of the freeloaders were either fans of the show who wished to join on their own right, or well-known characters on the web; however, some were former contestants who returned with a new role after leaving the house.
